What would be the best deal for a precision big game rifle including scope under $4000.oo. ( My budget) What make? What caliber? What scope? How far will it hit accurately? I love my 30-06 pump in close. I seem to have an affinity for 7mm mag. What action? Are bolts actions the only accurate rifles? Is there an extremely accurate automatic?

wow u have a nice budget..... i would recommend the Accuracy International AW rifle system also seen here http://www.wolverinesupplies.com/default.asp?Pg=8&do=3&mcid=1&scid=12&pid=39

its about 3300 dollars and i think it comes with scope and bi pod

and yes if you want accuracy bolt action is the only way to go. and i would use the .308 since its preferred by most snipers unless your using the .50cal

and if you want an extremely accurate auto ur looking at 10000 dollars. lower end ones are still 6000 plus.

I would lean more towards a 7mm or 300 Win mag, and even a 338 especially if it's also going to be used for big game.

Well, best bang for the buck will be a Savage! Get the caliber you want (7mm sounds good for double duty), and purchase a heavy target barrel for it in the same caliber. You can switch barrels easily yourself with inexpensive tools and it's easy to learn to do.

With your budget, you could get a nice Savage hunting rifle, great optics, a target barrel and target stock, barrel clamp, wrench and headspacing gauge, reloading setup and components and still be way under the $4k mark.

When i hear "Big Game" I think Cape Buffalo, or other large African creatures, but you seem to be implying North American game... just get whatever caliber you want in whatever fits you. 300WM or 300 RUM will drop anything in North America just fine. Whether you spend $400 or $4000 on a factory rifle for hunting big game, the results will be similar.

If it's pretty furniture you want, buy a Weatherby. They have some big ass cartridges such as their , 340, 378, 416 and 460's. They are nice to look at and hold, but they're no more accurate than a $500 Savage or Remington in a similar Caliber. CZ, for less money than a weatherby also has some pretty big stuff available.

If it is ultra accuracy you want, buy a Remington 700 in anything up to 338 and re-barrel it with a custom barrel. It will cost less and be way more accurate. 338RUM will kill almost anything.

IIRC, the scope and bipod are extra..............the rifle is $3300.00 by itself.............those AI Bipods are around the $400.00 mark, and the S&B PM-II Scopes that AI uses are around the $3500.00 to $3800.00 mark................

$3300 for an AIAW? Should this be the AIAE?
For $3600 I would go for a TRG22 or TRG42, but it is 308 or 338 LM

Can a 700 Remington be customized for 7mm mag? Why doesnt it come in 7MM Mag?

I didn't check which model................just making a point that you won't find a new AI rifle for $3300.00 including the S&B Scope and AI Bipod...............;)..................if you do, you got the deal of the century!!!!!!!:D

For a precision hunting rifle(modern) the top choices in my opinion would be HS Precision or Cooper. If money was limited it would be a Rem. 700.

What brand? Bolt? Auto? Scope?

That depends. You'll have to look further at exactly what you want. Will you be hunting mostly with this, or long range target shooting?

There are lots of possibilities.

For scopes. I really like the Zeiss Conquest line. Leupold is nice as well but I like the Zeiss just a bit better. Eventually I'll probably get a Night Force but that would only be for a very special and precise rifle. Otherwise the Zeiss is a very fine scope and is the ticket at significantly less than a NF NXS.

Remington Model 700XCR Long Range Tactical in .300 for big game or .308 if you are comfortable with your shot placement.

Sako TRG-42 in .338 always drops big game :p

You are pretty open to whats out there for precision rifles but buying the best gear wont make you shoot tight groups. I would start with a great base and build around that.

Custom R700 or similar would be my choice over a AI or Sako (in 308 anyway)

I saw you go to your local range and try out every rifle they have. Often times you will find the gun that you wanted is not the best one for you.

For .308 and these uses I'd just go with the Remington R5-milspec. It'll do both fairly well. However I do think the 7mm is a better round. But .308 is easy to get and will do the job.

If .308 works for you then that's probably the best bang for the buck rifle for those needs. It'll do the job right out of the box.

Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20x 50mm with the Rapid Z 1000 yard reticle (made for .308) is what I matched my R5 with.

Another very budget conscious choice for scopes is the Falcon Menace 4-14x 44mm FFP with the MP20 reticle. Enough magnification and adjustments for long range shooting and decent for hunting (Most of the guys I know that hunt prefer lower magnification). The price is reasonable too.

That doesn't include the scope or bipod.

IIRC the bipod is $300 and the scope is whatever you want to put on.

REALITY CHECK!

Is the $4K total including taxes or without?

If it's without, then a Savage or Remington is in order + rings and bases + scope (Leupold at the very least) + Harris bipod.

If it's with, then you will have to calculate the tax and subtract it, find out what rifle you want, then the rest for the scope and bases.

You can shoot from a rucksack, sand bags etc. Save up for the bipod.

like someone said already, it would be hard to beat an HS or a cooper, with a leupy vx3 or 7... or a night force in the 6-20 range. chambered in 7mm rem mag or 7rum that would be an awsome long range rig, my next vote would be to buy a savage, then find an HS stock and spin on a custom barrel and you should have a 1/2 MOA rifle for under 2 thousand bucks. leaving some serious doe for glass and or relaoding supplies

Unfortunately the Cooper doesn't come in magnum calibers. The Leupold VX-7 scopes are superb. I don't know how the VX-7 compares to a Nightforce, but the VX7 is much better than the VX-III

I am personally looking at going the Savage route, with a new barrel and stock. Reason for Savage action is the Stevens doesn't come with the accu-trigger.
