Who is Using a 28 Gauge, This 2025-26 Hunting Season and Now 2026-27 Season

I use a 28ga for a lot of hunting and enjoy loading my own shells for it.
I have 3 loads that I like to use.
1. General small game and upland game, I load a 3/4oz lead either in #6 or 7.5 shot at around 1250fps.
2. my heavy game load when I expect longer shots like late season pheasants, 7/8 oz lead load in #5 or 6 shot at around 1275 fps.
3. Non tox duck load, 3/4oz of bismuth #5 shot at 1275fps, works great at normal shooting distance.
I have shot a lot of game with the 28ga and these loads over the years and really have no need to use anything else unless I plane just feel like changing to something else for the fun of it.
Most interesting.Thanks for posting.

Out for a short partridge (ruffed grouse) hunt this afternoon.Probably a two hour walk.Had my 28 gauge AYA Model 3A out for the walk.Saw one partridge, but could not get a shot at it.:(

Picked up my first 28 gauge bird of the year yesterday.A red phase partridge (ruffed grouse). First red phase I have bagged in quite sometime.Used the 28 gauge Benelli SBE 3.Very light gun to carry in the uplands.:)

Out this morning on a duck hunt.Had the 3 inch 28 gauge Benelli SBE 3 along for the trip.Only saw about six ducks, none close enough for a shot.Five of them, I am not sure you could hit with a cruise missile.LOL

How far right did you have to hold ? Nice that you are taking a shine on the new gun

Knocked down 2 pheasants today with 28g 1 ounce 3" #6 .Very happy with there performance, not a wiggle out of each.
The 3" shell and #6 shot gives some velocity and energy to the 1 oz load that combination may prove to be the bomb and best available 3" load as the 7/8oz load is in the 2 3/4 inch shell.

Federal Prairie Storm upland 28g 3 inch 1 ounce 1300fps.I have been using this brand in 20g for past couple years they have been really good now in 28 they rocked both pheasants.

How are you guys finding meat damage with your shot. I’ve shot a handful of pheasants now at close range with #8 lead and almost no meat damage. I think I found one pellet on the surface of one breast that I can think of.

I have #5 in my other barrel, but I could see myself moving to #6 for pheasant.

I’ve only shot a few ruffies and they were starionary on a branch and I took their heads off. I usually only take a few ruffies at a time when I go out and I try not to shoot them flying because of the damage.

To be honest, it happen so fast I am not really sure how far right.Just pointed the gun in the general direction, before it got out of sight in the leaves and I got it.:)

What brand of ammunition are you using?2 3/4 or 3 inch? What gun?

It would work well for that.

What ammunition and shot size do you favour using in the gun for ruffed grouse? What choke is your gun, as I believe the earlier medallion model, came with a fixed choke.
I have regular Browning choke system. I think this medallion was a 2014 shot show special with removable chokes.
I just shoot regular Winchester or Remington 7.5 shells
