Hey all you Browning BPS 12Ga. owners,

Looking to buy one once my Pal comes and looking for some opinions on yours. Mainly quality of components and action, shooting, etc...

Also, how quick is it to load through the bottom feed/eject path?

Thanks,

I have had a BPS for 10 years now and compared to my buddies 870, mossberg and winchesters it is by far the smoothest. It isn't as easy to directly load a shell to the chamber as the others mentioned above as you need to have the pump about half way back, there is a sweat spot, instead of just all the way back. Loading throught the bottom is identical. The nice thing is when shooting from a blind you don't spray your buddies with empty hulls, but I didn't get to benefit from that. It never jamed or sticked and do to the smoothness it was very hard to short cycle (never)ie not load another shell.

I just graduated to the Gold two years back and the switch was not noticable, first shot downed a speading duck @ 40 yrds, worth evey penny, and now i can spat my buds with shell faster :)

I just bought a BPS in 16 gauge. (built on the 20 ga frame) Very smooth but the forearm rattles. (they all do) I have never thought the bottom loading feature to be a disadvantage. Stuff one in shuck it and your ready to go. Very easy to unload. Depress the shell stop and the rounds in the mag jump into your hand. 870's and others are not as easy to unload. The Mossy 500 and Ithaca 37 (which the BPS copied from) unload this way also. I had to have the butt shortened on mine. Most BPS run well over 14" LOP too long for me. They are GOOD guns and VERY reasonably priced.

cheers Darryl

The BPS is a good reliable gun, my major issue with the ones I had were the weak vent rib on top of the barrel... On one of my guns it was bent to the barrel by dropping from the standing position to the ground... It also had rust issues despite regular oil and cleaning.

I now shoot a Benelli Nova while hunting... And just got a Dominion Arms Grizzly for camping...

Cheers

I own a BPS and a 870. The 870 is a lot easier to take apart (trigger)and clean. BPS is fancier but BPS does rattle more than 870. To reduce rattle I put 80/90 gear oil on the pump slide for turkey. No it does not damage the gun/finish and the deer/coyotes can not smell the stinky oil until its too late, but it reduces the rattling noise. But the rattling is good when rattling for deer?

excellent choice. The only negative and it is a small one is that a little practice is needed to load one direct. The quality is far superior to present day remingtons.

The BPS is a great pumper, and the person to your right will love being there. In my opinion, the closest runner up is the Wingmaster as far as smoothness in action is concerned. You don't have to chamber a round as hard as other pumps. I bought mine used and still haven't had any problems. The mag cut off switch is a bonus when you need slugs ASAP, but apparently isn't offered in the newer BPS's I've seen. The Benelli Nova is the only other shotgun to offer this (I think). You might want to consider having this option depending on your location- please stay alive... enjoy!

lyle c, your right, the Nova has a "cut off" for the mag tube, it's a button that sits "flush" on the pump. When pressed, it allows you to eject the round you had chambered and insert another directly into the chamber. I like this feature on the Nova.

Tomorrow morning with my son I will head to SAIL store to look for a BPS Stalker 3½" 28" barrel. I will also look for the 20" Turkey barrel to complete the gun. More to come...:D

I'm a lefty and like the bottom ejection. Anyone use it for trap? The single shot loading issue could cause trouble. Any thoughts?

I use mine to shoot trap. Once your use to only opening the slide to were it allows you to load one shot, or just put one in the tube and racking, there are no issues. It's all in what feels comfortable to you.

Here it is! 28" barrel 3½" chamber. I did shot a couple of cartridges in it. The smoothness of the action really impressed me! I did installed Uncle Mike's swivels. Next is going to find a turkey barrel, that is less an easy task but I am sure it worth it!... :D
