i hear many people pronounce words as they see them, not as they are supposed to be. the biggest one is Leupold. to me, this word is pronounced "Loo-pold" but i hear lots of guys pronounce it "Lee-uh-pold"

so which is it?

I don't know. Apparently at one time, the website for Leupold had a pronunciation guide. I watch some American TV, and the commercial for Leupold scopes the guy pronounces it Lee-uh-pold. Like you, I would have guessed it the other way round. When I hear Lee-uh-pold, I think of that old Bugs bunny cartoon where he plays the opera conductor for Yosimite sam and makes him sing figaro till his face turns blue.

edit: was looking for a picture and I now realize it wasn't Yosimite sam after all.

Say Sako

Not trying to hijack this thread or anything but maybe while we're at it we could be enlightened by those who know how to pronounce the word: Sako. I have been told in Europe it is pronounced "Sock-o" but I hear many people say "Say-ko". Which is correct?

The one that bugs me the most is saying Brno as Bruno.
The "U" is silent, just like the number 6 is silent in "cat".

Lew-polled and say-ko is what I've stuck to for ages, although I have heard the sock-oh as well, and now learned that it is indeed correct (damn, I prefer say-ko lol).

Now for the real question: How do you pronounce Aluminum?:stirthepot2::D;)

Althoe im of Finnish decent i pronounce it as Say-co rather than the correct Sock-o /shrug
if language didnt evolve we would all be still talking like ... "Forsooth doth that not seem to be a rather large stag on the hill over yon? Methinks we should hasten anon to dispatch it before it doth depart"

The Leupold Exec I saw on Wildtv pronounced it Loo-Pold. Sako should be pronounced Sah-ko, but we've Canadianized it.

Another Canadianized one is Sabot slugs. Say-bow, not Sah-butt. :)
