single shot action strength

This coming Turkey season I wanted to take a gobbler with my grandfathers Cooey single shot 12 gauge.

He passed it on to me before he died and I shot my first rabbit with it.

I am wondering if the action is strong enough for the manum 2 3/4 in winchester shells.

The gun is in decent condition and it was probably bought at canadian tire in the 50's or sixties.

I don't know that i'd say they don't make 'em like they used to in every case, but your cooey single shot is likely the model 840. It should say on the barrel whether it's chambered for 3" shells or just 2 3/4".It's very likely a full choke and you should have no problems at all. If it's the older model 84, a lot of them were chambered for 2 3/4" shells.
 
Shotshells are typically loaded to about he same pressure regardless of payload. "Magnum" shells are not loaded to higher pressure than other shells, in fact some of the "lighter" loads can actually be higher pressure.

If you take the rear stock off and replace the take-down lever spring with a NEW one, not a "good lookin one" that you may find at a show, then it wont self open. they are like suspension springs in cars, after a few years they get weak and sag, lol. :runaway:

Your action should be plenty strong. Unless your gun has been badly abused(it doesn't sound like it) it will handle 2-3/4 mags with no problem. The old adage is if you are not sure get it checked out by some one you trust,and I don't mean a dealer because they will tell you it is no good and try to sell you a new one. I have an old 84 model that is so old it isn't even marked for shell length. All it says is 12 guage "FULL". I got it from a neighbor in a box and had to repair the stock,make a trigger guard and tighten the forearm. I then lopped the barrel off to 21 inches. it makes one handy little gun for a truck, quad, horseback or what ever mode of transport suites me. Seeing yours was your Granddad's you probably won't do that but these are good strong guns that were made in Canada and not Jap Junk so I think yours should be a shooter. I shoot grouse and pheasant with mine all the time and it is deadly out to 40 yards. When my sons and I shoot claybirds they allways want to use my Cooey and leave the auto loader for me.
