7.62x54R in the Future

Just debating over buying a Mosin Nagant or a Swiss K-31.

7.62x54R is pretty scarce here in Canada, but once it's passed as safe, will we get a whole bunch like the in the States? Also, how long will the global amount of this ammo be around for in the near future? Will it be pointless to buy a MN because in 10 years, 7.62x54R will be a calibre of the past, other than for those that reload?

Obviously 7.5 Swiss is obsolete, but it's easily reloadable.

I don't know what you mean by safe, but there will be lots of X54 in the future. There are billions of rounds sitting in warehouses around the world, and is still a major world calibre as a result of continueing use of the PKM. X54 is just as reloadable as the X55

I believe what he means is "will we see more surplus in Canada in the future?"

Billions of rounds in foreign warehouses don't mean much if it's not imported or importable.

X2

not going to do US in CANADA any good unless the government lets you importers bring it in and sell it to us....

I know I am holding off on any MNs or SVT purchases until I know the ammo is obtainable again.

Guess I will have to spend that money outfitting my new M14...DAMN!!!

Does it still need to be tested when it is being imported by an individual who is declares it at the border under the personal exemption? Has anyone tried?

I can't believe this is an issue. I have never owned a rifle in 7.26x54R, but often thought I should get one simply because the ammo was SOOO cheap and universally available. When did it all change?

Ammo imported like this is for personal use and cannot be sold. As such, it is exempt from testing and does not need to be on the approved list.

Yeah, but you can't export it from the US without an export permit. So no more talk about driving ammo over the border.

So does anybody know what the future of this calibre in Canada is? I mean why exactly can't we import large quantities of it? Why is the corrosive ammo so dangerous to the environment if the Americans are shooting it up south of the 49th?

Screw non-reloadable corrosive crap, buy some good quality rounds and reload! Better for your rifle. Hell, better yet, cast too!

There are a lot more bullets available to the Swiss as it uses .308 bullets instead of .310-.312 bullets. Personally I reload the Russian but I can't wait to get more of that cheap surplus stuff like the Hungarian Heavy ball I used to get from SIR for 6$/20. Man that stuff was awesome.

Never done this calibre, but I am certain it can be done, as I have done it with other calibres (.308). I don't think any border guard has ever even asked to look at any firearms parts I've brought in.

Howdy

Seems nobody has addressed the main question, which one is better an MN or a K31.

My opinion after shooting both, K31, hands down winner. Unless you only plan on busting rocks in some quarry, in which case a MN is fine.

K31 has:

better trigger
detachable mag
rimless cases feeds smoother, more reliable
better sights
superior accuracy
boxer brass for reloading by using the .284 win case, made in the USA. Anything that I know of that is boxer primed for the 7.62X54R in made in europe and is $$$$$
Better looking rifle (my humble opinion).
Better build rifle.

The only MN I would ever consider would be a Finnish Rebuilt.

And for the guy that said that the 7.5X55 is obsolite, well you better tell the Swiss that, they still use the GP11 round for their GPMGs.
