Who says precision rifle has to be expensive?

If you hunt in thick bush and expect close shots a lower power is good. IMHO anyhow. I have a 2X7 redfield I put on my .338 15years ago and hve not touched it. The 2 power seems considerably better than 3 in these conditions. A friend even prefers a 1x5 leupold. Its a personal thing I guess.
I am surprised to see my post turns into Remmy Savage argument. Then it's on it's way to a war between opticals. 
To me, things are simple: Remington guns are fine solid guns, but the company is stupid, or there is no way Savage can make its fame.
On the optical side, I say the hell to the expensive scopes. I have a $1,000 scope. And I think I was silly to buy it.
Shooting is NOT fashion business - to get good result I say you better know how to control the cost. That's the reason I use $80 scope - so I can use money on other stuff.

Shooting sure is funny. I made exactly the opposite decision and bought what would qualify as upper end scopes 15 years or so ago. But I think it depends on what you are going to use them for really. It was accuracy of the turret system that sold me on Leupold at the time, because I had to keep shifting from one setting to another alot, and the cheaper scopes simply would not do that accurately. I wasn't so concerned about quality of optics, except I didn't want them to be too bright or have too much distortion, feeling at the time that a number of scopes were pretty good on these dimensions. My hunting rifle had an old Tasco on it for years though and it did OK. It was a bit of mystical experience shooting in each year with that Tasco though! I'm actually tempted to try Tasco again as I've read on some posts here that the Japanese made ones are pretty good.
