I've been cleaning my 12FVSS in .223 with a 3 piece aluminum rod and hoppes #9 for long enough! I have a friend that will be doing some shopping at Wholesale Sports near the end of this month so I have a shopping list that I'd like CGN to review:

Lubricant: Hoppes #9
Cleaning: Gunslick Foaming Bore Cleaner (better then Break-Free?)
Necessary? Bore Guide: J. Dewey Mfg. .17-.22 calibers (correct model? Maybe .24-7mm? wholesale sports confuses me.)
Bore Mop: J. Dewey Mfg. .22-.27 calibers (wool)
Slotted Jag: Misc. nylon 8/32 threaded

I read that J. Dewey Mfg. will ship cleaning rods to Canada pretty cheap, so I'm e-mailing him regarding the 36" nylon coated 1-piece rod for .22-.26 calibers.

I already have the slotted jag and a bottle of Hoppes #9 in my kit. I use the numerous bags of 5.56 cotton patches I have laying around.
I have read some of the other threads on precision rifle cleaning and I heard mention of a nylon brush. I remember using a cleaning patch wrapped around the brass brush to clean my C7 bore when a patch in the slotted jag just wouldn't cut it. Is this something worth investing in as well? I'm thinking a Kleen Bore .224 brush.

I would include some "wipe out" and some wipe out accelerator. awsome stuff! I stopped brushing when I started using this stuff it works amazing. I would only brush if the barrel wouldn't come clean with a couple cleanings with wipeout but I havn't seen that yet

Wipe out cleaner, Gun Juice, Dewey rod and jag, no brushes, and lots of patches.
Done!!
#9 and Breakfree were the go to items in the 60s, things have advanced a tad since then, why not modernize and save yourself some time effort and needless wear and tear on your gun?

I use Hoppes and Sweets for cleaning my rifles with a bit of JB Bore Paste now and again.
I have a bottle of Patch Out that someone can have for free if they want to pick it up.

I guess I have to make some revisions to my list :D

I'm not sure where to get the Wipe-out or Gun juice? I checked SIR, Wholesale and Russell's...

Forget the slotted jags and get either the parker-hale style or a pierce jag (can be used either way). The rod you want is the one for .22 cal. You want to get one longer than 36". The length of your barrel, plus the action, plus 3-4 inched for the bore guide sticking out the back.
Never used a bore mop but I have use a nylon brush. I don't use Hoppes or break free, as ATR stated there are much better products out there today.
Don't try to ram a brush and patch down your barrel, but you can wrap a patch around a brush to just clean the chamber.

By the sounds of things you are ex-military. Remember cleaning your weapon daily was to ensure proper function and had nothing to do with accuracy. Shoot your rifle until the groups open up before touching the bore.

Frontier also carries Wipe Out... or at least he did.

It is some amazing stuff. I thought I had my rifle spotless until my friend made me look like a fool when he sprayed that stuff down the barrel.

I'm surprised by the endorsements for wipe-out. I have had barrels that fouled heavier than others and a repeat performance with Sweets after using wipe-out revealed plenty of copper that wipe-out wouldn't touch. I've let the W-O sit overnight and same thing. It's a hard sell for me. I'm a sweets + BBS guy myself, followed by hosing everything out with brake cleaner.

Whatever spackles your crack I guess.

I also use Wipe out - good stuff. How does one incorporate gun juice into the cleaning regimen ?

After your bore is 100% clean , you apply Gun Juice by wet patch and shoot 1 rnd, wet patch and shoot 1 rnd, about 10 shots will fully coat a barrel, after that I normally run 1 wet patch of Gun Juice down the bore after a days shooting, which can be several hundred rnds.
I have 1500 rnds out of my 338LAI now and have no discernable copper fouling. Yes I own a borescope so can see it, or not.

That's amazing! I'll certainly be doing that once I've got all the right stuff in my kit. I'll be able to use all the Winchester bullets I have now as foulers for use after cleaning haha.
