I glued on a True Glow on my Mossberg. The threads were weak so I screwed it in and used common epoxy to hold it in place and build a round the bead a bit. I have fired about 50 slugs through it since and it is holding.

Sometimes you see a blued barrel band front sight and sling band on a stainless bbl.

How are these permently attached without using heat and ruining the finish?

IMO that little bit of screw/pin, even mostly stripped, would add a tremendous amount of holding power once epoxied in. same goes for epoxying something onto a vent rib.
i think a simple smooth sight base on a plain barrel would be much weaker.

I used some hot glue on my shot gun to hold my sights in. Problably not the best thing but its what I had and seems to be working so far.

On the last barrel band I installed, I used Brownells Acra-glas gel to hold it on the barrel. Squeeze-out was wiped off with acetone.
