I'm thinking of getting a Rem. 700 SPS Tactical in .308 and need some help...

1) how does it compare to the Remington LTR?

2) how accurate is it being 'only' a 20in-er?

3) who stocks these and what is the BEST PRICE on the SPS tactical?

Thanks!

I have an SPS .223 (formerly a skinny barrel) that I replaced with a (bought on the EE Forum here at CGNutz) take-off 20" LTR barrel. DAMN that barrel shoots like a house on fire. I'm getting half inch groups and I'm fzcking around, since my bench technique really sucks. :D

My earthpig hunting buddy however has an SPS Tactical (20" barrel, 9" twist, Hogue rubber stock) that he absolutely loves. He shoots it into 3/4" all the time and his benchrest style is quite sketchy.

Now here's the interesting part.... These rifles disappear off the racks in gun shops. So if you know that there is ONE at your favorite gun store, then hurry up and buy one. They sell quickly. We did not have time to ponder the decision to buy this .223 LTR wannabe when I encountered it at Perry's Gun Shop in Sault Ste.Marie last July. I just called my buddy and scored his PAL number. Today, he has successfully bagged a whack of groundhogs with super success and he credits me (how nice :D) with obtaining his kick ass record.

Life is good.

Peace be to journey!

I bought mine (.308 SPS tactical) a couple weeks ago from frontier (http://www.frontiertaxidermy.com/html/precision_rifles.html), their price is the best I've seen, more than a 100$ less than other stores, so I grabbed one right away. I didn't get to shoot it as I don't have optics on it yet, but it feels right.

I never handled a LTR but I think the main differences are:
-the stock is a Pillar Bedding vs Full Length Bedding Block for the LTR,
-the finish is bead blast blued vs parkerized for the LTR,
-the barrel isn't fluted.

For about the same price as a basic SPS DM it seems a good buy... you loose the detachable mag but gain a 20" bull barrel and a nicer stock.

IM Lugger, i purchased a 700 Police LTR (20" barrel) in .308, last week. my friend (and main shooting buddy) picked up the 700 SPS Tactical (20" barrel) in .308, a little while before me.
since i've fired both (keep in mind they're still being 'broken in'), i can give you a pretty good idea what the difference is... the SPS-T has the Hogue stock, which is pretty nice. it's definitely not aftermarket nice, but it's works. my LTR comes factory w/ the parkerized finish, the HS Precision stock, the fluted barrel and other stuff... i've got the Bushnell Elite 4200 Tactical 6-24x50 (not mounted yet cause my Seekins Precision 20 MOA base/ 30mm low rings haven't come in yet) and the Harris HBRM-S bipod. so far i like it. my friends SPS-T has the Elite 3200 3-9x50 scope, and we both agree it isn't enough for anything 'long range.'

i just purchased the Leica CRF 1200 rangefinder a few hrs ago, so i'll get back to you once my gun is fully broken in, and i have some real distances calculated (and the scope mounted/ zeroed)!! ;)

Other than the stock being plastic on the SPS and fiberglass on the LTR the basics are the same. LTRs are NOT piller bedded, they have a bedding block in the stock, which should still be properly bedded to get the best accuracy from the rifle. The Hogue stock being tupperware will not take bedding as well as fiberglass does.
The 20" barrel is no concern, we use them all the time out to 1000 yards very effectively.
As for cheapest I guess it boils down to how much service and customer support are worth to you.

???

I ordered one of these from epps a very long time ago, in .223, I think I paid $700 something all inc, which they of course dinged me for right up front. I am really looking forward to getting it but it seems they are in very high demand, I handeled the .308 version and they are wonderful feeling guns. I sure wish that epps could get their S_it together and get me the gun i paid for!!!

waiting to try it............:runaway::runaway:
