I had mentioned that I had built a couple of automatic game feeders in other posts and had a few people PM me for pics and details.

here you go:

This here is my bear proof feeder. It was made from a 55gallon drum with a sturdy cage protecting the motor underneath. Seeing that I can only make it to the bait site once a week, this keeps the bears hitting the bait site every evening. Once bear season is over this feeder is used to feed gobblers and deer.

It's important to build a funnel inside so you don't get any rotting in the corners of the barrel. I also recommend welding a bar horizontally to prevent the barrel from concaving due to all the weight (I'd estimate weight when full to be around 300-400 lbs), you want to avoid the opening to become oval shaped or you will never get the lid back on.

You will need to have easy access to the feeder timer and the cage will have to come on and off occasionally. I welded the bolts to the barrel and have everything tied down with wing nuts. No tools needed! I also recommend you paint your wing nuts a bright color so they may be found easily if dropped.

Here is another one of my automatic game feeders. It's light and easy to carry in the bush, but if a bear can get his paws on it... it's toast!

I use the " American Hunter R Pro Feeder Kit
The analog clock timer permits one to 24 daily feeding times with three feed rates. Kit is easy to install and compatible with nearly any feed container.
"

These can be had for 40$ at Bass pro shops/cabela's.

I will also add pics of my bear proof trail cam shortly... stay tuned;)

Well done. I'll have to dig up my feeder pics somewhere. Its similar to your first pic, but I did a quicky paint job. I also had hung the barrel with the eye bolts on the side with a triangle rope, but I'm going to use a bar, with chains hanging straight down, so they don't touch the side of the lid.

Any ideas on one that does not hang ????? I just got my 30gal drum, and the motor and a solar panel, but I do not think I will have a strong enough tree to hang it from. Any ideas out there on making a home made tripod or stand for it ??????

I made a tripod from 3 ironwood trees, about 14' long, just wired them up at one end and spread them out. Pics to come...

I just nailed a 2X6 from tree to tree and a $1.00 red hook screwed into it and it works great.

My old auto feeder had the biscuit so I bought another one with all the bells and whistles this time. Solar charger and a 200' remote control on it, cats ass.

A quick search on google, and you should come up with a lot of different models.

Whats the ideal height off the ground????

I like to have the bottom of the feeder 6-7' off the ground, prevents the bears from reaching it.

No bears in my area, but I am guessing a raccoon could have some fun with it. I have mine all painted now, came out pretty good, now I just need to install the horizontal bar like you mentioned. I am guessing that just using washers and nuts I could get away with not having to bring it to someone to weld.

What did you make the funnel out of ??????? A place I know sells them for $29, but I'd rather not have to buy one.

My buddy works at a metal shop and got these pipes for free. They were missing and inch for the project they were working on so they gave them to him. They are very light for their size.

It is pretty solid, so I bet I could lean a ladder against it if I had too, but I have an extra aluminum step ladder laying around, so I am going to just leave it it the woods. Its just the right height to get to the cover of the drum, and since the cover has two screw in caps, I will not have to take the whole cover off.

I was thinking of putting a golf ball basket from the driving range on the bottom to protect the motor like you have, but I have no bears in the area. Do you think raccoons or other rodents can climb medal piping ????
