Please tell me you are not planning to shoot the cheapest surplus crap ammo typically produced for MGs, you can find out of a precision rifle??
It sure won't be precision then.

Wouldn't it be OK if he was just doing some plinking?

I guess alot would depend on what the rifle is. If a factory SAAMI chamber, all that would be affected is bore from shooting and this will happen whatever ammo is used.
If however it is a precision rifle with a match spec , close tolerance chamber, then nasty things could occur as MG ammo tends to be not terribly close to match chamber tolerances. Both brass dimension and powder charges can be liberal in spec and depending on country of origin may be loaded quite hot.

What kind of consequences do you foresee in the latter case? And would you know some good origin countries for some surplus plinking ammo?

Thanks

Pressure issues mostly, but there can be problems with with neck diameter of the brass being larger than the chamber dimensions on tight tolerance chambers. Some of the offshore made MG ammo is not copper jacketed, which I do not think would be good for a matchgrade barrel that is not chrome lined.
I don't have any useful input on good versus bad surplus ammo other than the problems I see from time to time when surplus ammo is used in guns it is not intended to be used in.

My advice to get into reloading, that way you can shoot cheaper ammo that you have total control over.

Not necessarily

Surplus and Precision do not go hand-in-hand. We'll have to start a plinking forum.

Peter

A lot of surplus is capaple of 1 inch at a hundred - like .762 portuguese fnm , D/A, etc. I have even consistently shot half inch with sorted norinco 762x39!
And yes a lot of milsurp is 2-3 inches (like South African). You just have to find what the boomstick likes to eat -

That may well be, but many of us do not consider 1 moa to be precision, 1/2 moa is getting there, but I have yet to see that sort of accuracy with Norc ammo.

Redman and all, we do 2 things with our business; sell centrefire ammo to military and police with a very small amount to precision rifle shooters, and components to civilian PR shooters including Fullbore and BR. I have since 1995 as a business and previously promoted handloading as it: provides the best accuracy and least expensive accurate ammo.

Bulk ammo has never been an option for precision shooting with any of the shooters I know as we don't deal with plinkers - we deal with snipers and accuracy Aficionados, an appropriate Lapua moniker.

I'm sorry, I couldn't help myself:

Thanks for the input, Peter. Judging by what reloads typically cost vs. factory and their highly touted performance here, I'll no doubt begin once I hone my shot placement ability.

He wants to make the most of his H&K there, so yeah. In fact, he does full-length brass resizing by squeezing the casing in his bare hand!

lol. Reloading? In a HK? And here all along I was lead to believe that HK's made brass all but unusable once it's been fired. Silly me!
