I'm new to hunting. I want a 30-06 and a detachable magazine. These are the guns I am looking at.

Savage 111 FCXP3(will eventually have to replace scope)
$430.00

Mossberg 4x4 (again will eventually have to replace scope)
$430-$580

Weatherby Vanguard Comination Package-Features: Vanguard synthetic rifle • Bushnell Banner 3-9x40mm • Riflescope with phase-coated optics and 1/4-minute click adjustments • Leupold Rifleman rings and bases • Uncle Mike's nylon sling • Plano PRO-MAX injection-moulded gun case • Each package is indivdually mounted and bore-sighted at the Weatherby Custom Shop.
$680.00

Of your choices I would go with the Vanguard. Value of the Weatherby package aside for the moment, the Howa action has a good reputation for quality. I am often turned off by rifle/scope packages as the scopes tend to be bottom of the barrel quality, and the rings are generally poor, but again, that Weatherby package sounds like a winner.

a few of my guides use the savage and all have good experieces with theirs.
scopes had to be replaced.
i think all packages have cheap scopes, regardles who is selling it (the rifle).

Well, the Vanguard is no doubt a better all around gun, however it does not come with the Detachable Magazine, as per your requirement. Floorplate only.

step up to the Savage 116 FCSS
116 FCSS - Long Action Barrel: 22”, Magazine Capacity: 4, Weight: 6 ½ lbs. Cat. No. 424014 - .270 Win. Cat. No. 424016 - .30-06 Sprg.
$600 at SIR.

it has the new style DM which is an improvement, Accutrigger and is stainless.
IMO a better deal than the package gun, on which the scope and mounts (especially rings/mounts) are of low quality and will need to be replaced anyway.

Could you tell me with a hinged floor plate. When you unload does it unload out the floorplate, and isn't this harder to keep your ammo off the ground?

yes when you unload it drops them out the bottom, however its not hard to either catch your rounds with your hand or turn the rifle upside down when you pop the floorplate and then dump them into your hand.

you can actually load a hinged floorplate rifle very quickly by just dumping the rounds into the floorplate (facing the right way of course) then popping it shut.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned it. But do yourself a favor and head over to the gun shop; shoulder the guns you are considering. Then decide, what feels better. No sense in getting a gun and finding out it doesn't fit right.

It's kinda like buying shoes. Try the fit before you buy.

I own the savage 116 fcss in .300 win mag. Dont get one!!!!! The stock is too flimsy, and NO ONE makes an aftermarket stock for the detachable mag version.(at least not a good looking one) I have tried to find one and unless you have the internal box mag, you are out of luck. Also the action is so big, you need an extension ring just to make a normal length scope fit with even a centimeter of eye relief play. I had to buy my scope based on the length of the tube, not on the options of the scope like so many people do. 9 out of 10 scopes in 3x9 power just wouldn't fit. AND I had to grind out a V-shaped area on the scope ring for the bell housing.
Anyhow, why spend the extra money on a package gun if you are just gonna replace the scope anyways. Thats throwing away 100 bucks.
Buy a gun without a scope and use the saved 100 bucks towards a decent scope. You can get a half decent scope for 200 or more bucks. Look at the bushnell elite 3200 and some other brands in that price range. Nikon makes decent scope for 200-250 and there are others. I have just tried out my friends .30-06 Savage at the range (same model as mine 116 fcss) and because of the light weight (6.5 lbs) it kicked like a Mo Fo. Check out the weatherby and maybe some CZ rifles. I think you could do better than the cheap package guns. Even try looking at some used guns. There are plenty of great guns at good deals (some even come with good scopes)
But you must decide for yourself, its gonna be YOU lugging it around, shooting it and feeling the recoil, etc. Just use us as a way to not make the same mistakes we did. I wouldn't buy this particular Savage again, just because of the soggy stock.

My buddy just bought a weatherby.. the trigger is really bad.. and the stock touches the barrel on either side as it snakes away from you..

Personally I have had good luck with the Savages.. But friends who bought the package guns didn't get a box through them and the Simmons scopes have crapped out... just buy the gun and a bushnell 3200.. they are a very good value for the money..

The Stevens are the same rifle just with out the options like accu trigger...
