Moose poachers fined $10,000 each

unfair?

there was no second chance for either of those animals! if you are going to shoot any game you had better damn well eat it, and do it humanly!
they need time, i dont care how young they are. they obviously had the foresight to get a 22, ergo pre-meditation. they can get all the loving the need from fred in cell block d.

they should be given a second chance in society, after paying their debt to it. why should they be allowed to obtain a firearm or hunt again.

This stinks, it is high time we the people of Canada, told our politicians, enough is enough.

While I am not indicating, that poachers should be dealt with lightly. According to stats Canada, in 2005/2006 there were 143 convicted homicide cases in Canada. 18 of these convictions resulted in PROBATION, while 3 others were given conditional sentences. Yes, you can get less for KILLING a HUMAN BEING, that you can for POACHING a moose.

We, need our judges to implement sentences that fit the crime. If they are unwilling to do so, then the Government must, through legislation, force them to. There in absolutely no reason, that a conviction of homicide, should result in probation. NO WAY.

slap on the wrist for the punks.

however, what about "Canada's finest" that drive around drunk and shoot out of their vehicles at anythin that they see?
because it is "their right" to "hunt"?

I agree RMG, poach an animal and you will get a $10,000 fine or more, jail time, never hunt again or maybe we should just put them to death. But if you drive impaired and kill a human you may get a $500 fine lose your licence for a year and look out because your insurance will go up. Yea thats not a big deal we can live with that. I think we gotta few loose screws?

The story says nothing about seizure of assets used in commsion of the act. It is very possible that the "kids" also lost vehicles, firearms, and other items. I do not condon the actions of these phuck heads, but there may be more to the penalties that orignallty reported.

I was with a friend 4 years ago here in the NWT. He asked me to second him on his hunt so he didn't have to go alone. I wasn't hunting, just helping him so that if he got an animal , he wouldn't have to do everything by himself, and its just not safe to hunt alone.
Anyhow, we were on skidoo's travelling across a huge lake (frozen) and he spotted a lone moose on the shoreline about half a mile away. We drove up to about 300 yards and stopped. He shot with his .338 win mag and dropped the moose. When we got up to the moose, we dragged it onto the ice to make skinning and quartering easier (as he was on the shoreline and the snow was about 4 feet deep) When we started skinning the moose, I immediately noticed several green spots of meat under the skin. We cut him up and loaded him onto the toboggan. When we got home and hung the quarters, I dug out SEVENTEEN .22 cal bullets from the moose meat. He had been shot and left to die by some a$$hole. We had no Idea how badly he was infected until we were in a controlled environment. I called the wildlife office and they came to take a look. He said that another moose had been found dead 3 days before with 12 rounds of .22 in it.

That's kinda of a bold statement. I go out with a .22 during moose season (Not to hunt moose). If we bag our limit or if your not feeling to poop hot and just want to mill about; go looking partridge or small game. I don't see what's wrong with that. (It's legal where I am, not sure about other provinces).

um go back and read the forum rules!

its 100% understandable to be pizzed off over crap like this and we all should be, but you will never see jail time for idiots like theese guys, and besides I dont want my taxes used to pay for them to live!, a few years ago they would have been lucky to get $1000 fine each, I beleive that a loss of there rights to own firearms should also be included in the sentancing, as well as loss of auto/atv used in the incident. If you realy wanted to tuffen up on them maybe community services of 2 or 3 thousand hours working with groups like ducks unlimited or other wildlife orgs creating habitat, see how they like never having a free weekend for a year or 2 but jail ...that just costs us the law abiding hunter more money in the end ;)

What do you mean, "Give them a second chance?" They already have a second, third, fourth, etc. etc. Currently a hunting ban is only valid in the Province where it's given, it's not Canada wide. So they have only to drive to BC or Sask and they can legally hunt again. This is something that should be pushed and pushed and pushed until it's changed and a hunting ban can be made Canada wide, not just Provincial as it is now.

Sgt Rock -

Your comments were edited. I can understand your sentiment and it was written in a moment of frustration and anger, but this is DEFINITELY not allowed here. NO discussions of anything illegal like that at ALL.

Lots of people read this site. Not all of them are friendly to us. Try to keep the temper in check before typing :)

I agree 100%

$ 10 G's apiece is about right ... just hope it goes to Alberta's moose management program. Should have been an automatic jail term attached.
" Cooler ... 60 days ". Maybe they could each find a new 'friend" there for evening entertainment.

Agreed...how handy to jump all over a couple of foolish rednecks. Yes they deserve what they get and more..but we have bigger problems as mentioned above. Shooting pregnant does and cows in their winter yards for "sustenance", and all year seasons..Just the tip of the ice berg. I know its pretty much futile to even get upset over...but it goes on all the time..one law for all..right. When was the last time such fines were handed out to the "others" who abuse our great country's wildlife?
