Thinking about an M14

I was thinking about picking up an Norinco M14 and was wondering can it handle comercial 308 ammo you can get at walmart? I know the difference between 7.62 and 308 so I was just wondering if it is ok for the M14. Surplus ammo is a little hard to find around here. The amount of 308 ammo used would not be great maybe 30 or 40 rounds a week at the most during the summer months. Thanks
 
Once you fire off a few rounds.... send me 5 pcs of fired brass and I'll measure your headspace. Usually 2 local stamps and a cheap padded envelope will do the trick.

Yah, just keep your bullets under the 170 gr mark and you will be just fine. Don't get rid of your .308 fired commercial brass... you can always neck size it once you start reloading ! Lots cheaper than buying commercial ammo.

Let me be the first to say don't just think about buying one, run out and buy two.

Both mine have been digesting Winchester 150-grain silver-box X3085 Power-Points without problem.

I know the Go/No-go/field gauges, but how can I know the exact headspace? is there any way/trick to measure it? thanks.
 
"...how can I know the exact headspace..." No need. It's a manufacturing tolerance only. If the bolt closes on a Go, but not a No-Go or, if it does close on a No-Go, a Field, you're fine.
"...can always neck size it once you start reloading..." For a bolt action only. Semi-autos require FL resizing every time.

People building their match space guns will probably want to measure exact headspace for their loads.

There are kits of headspace gauges stepping up by 0.001" or the cheaper route would be to use shims and slowly measure by stacking up.
 
I don't know if this is the place or not, but many have asked about
more M-14s....
Well our container has been "visiting" with Canada Customs for the past two weeks, it is expected here soon....
Now taking orders....
One more container this summer and its all over....

cbr i have been blasting off federal power shok 150grns all winter works excellent and costs 14 a box of 20.the m14s is labeled as a .308 rifle and it shoots it well.just like anything keep it clean.
