Japenese Type I rifle ?

Guys, I was dealing on a bunch of guns tonight and was shown a real oddball. It's definitely the only one I have ever seen like it. It was a like new Japenese WW2 Type "I" long rifle in 6.5 Japanese. They were made by Italy for Japan and are similar to the Carcano in many ways. The most noteable difference is an internal Mauser type magazine. I was asked to make an offer on this gun as well as a beautiful P-14 and 2 VERY Pristine - P17's(one Remington and a Winchester). I have no idea what to offer the gentleman for them. Any ideas? I am used to dealing with Lee Enfields and Mausers but don't normally deal in these other types of bolt action milsurps. Any kind of advice is welcomed!

ok...a quik read and....

The type "I" is descibed as a mystery, unknown,apparently,very much a,to some extent....type of rifle

Can I have it?...You can keep the 14s and 17s
 
I have no idea what to even offer the gentleman for it or the other ones for that matter. They are all in unbelievable shape. The Type I is virtually brand new as is the one P-17. The other P-17 and the P-14 are VERY nice as well but have seen a bit of use. I don't want to insult him and I don't want to over bid. I'm at a loss here. I'd only be looking to keep the one P-17 and one P-14 so I'd be selling the Type I and the one P-17 right away anyway. I guess that answers the question as to whether you can obtain it Klunk. You can if I end up with it.

Well, I guess you could say that Canuck, but actually it comes from the fact that I run a small scale hardrock gold exploration business. :) OCCASIONALLY I find a real nugget in the gun department though and it looks like these bunch could be my find of the year. I am in a real predicament as to what to offer this guy for any of these rifles though. I just spent several hours looking online to see what they are going for and what few examples I saw seemed to be going for big bucks especially the P-17's. I wish I knew what would be a high and low to pay for these guns in Canada but everything I find seems to be U.S. related.

Well I used to play in those Graywackes myself :)

Anyhow, I am no expert but I have seen shooter grade P14's and P17s go for $250 to $350 depending on condition. Mint condition ones will increase that value.

As for the Type I, I've never heard of one before this post but T38's go for $150 to $350. This one being rare will add significantly to its value to an interested and knowledgeable collector.

I believe both those rifles have been for sale for quite some time though (in fact, the P17 is now listed as "reduced"), so obviously they aren't in demand at that price.
I'd chuck some numbers out there but everytime I do someone shoots me down telling me I'm wrong :redface:
I assume the fellow doesn't know pricing either? He must have some idea what they are worth to him?
I surprised some of our other resident milsurp experts haven't chimed in here?

Type I is in a different boat from the more common Type 38. The Type I was made for a Japanese Naval contract by Beretta between 1938-42 and most saw little use. The last two I saw went for the $250 - $350 range.
 
I would suggest $400 for about market value on a Type I. They are uncommon enough to not be collected agressively and Japanese rifles in general are underpriced. Just my $.02 worth.
 
Thanks Guys for the advice. I arranged a meeting with the gentleman again on Tuesday and will be making an offer on several of the guns , some Milsurps and a few newer commercial guns. We spoke on the phone today and talked a bit price wise. I think I will end up with the P-14 and the Type I. I am walking away from the P-17's as he wants way more than I feel they are worth AND the Remington ended up being an arsenal refurbished gun that has a counterbored muzzle(about 2 inches) so it obviously was muzzle worn when it when in for the refurbish. Although the rifling looks good, I am sure the counterboring will cut it's value so I think I'll leave it to someone else. I wish I was into Japanese rifles, but I'm not, so the Type I will likely be ending up on the EE if I get it. The darned thing even has the original twist on brass muzzle guard on it. It has to be one of the cleanest Milsurps I have ever seen. It certainly couldn't be any nicer than it is. It will make someone a fine addition to their collection when it is bought. I'll post the results of the dealing in the thread when it is over. Thanks again for all the advice guys!

Japalian ! The Italians made some for the Japs[Engineers or Navy?] on a mauser type action in carbine length.Not common but I do remmember seeing a few in the Gunrunner in the early 80's in unissued condition! Shot 1.5-2" groups as well and took Jap bayonet..................Harold

Those brass twist on muzzle covers are quite valuable alone. I would presume that that one would fit the T38 as well.
