Hi all,

Thought I would report on my first turkey hunt.

Got up at 3:30 at the site by 4:15 and to my dismay, my GPS couldn't acquire a signal and my flags from the night before were either gone or too hard to find. Lesson learned there.

Anyways, wandered around for 30 mins or so and found a good spot. Can't remember what time I started calling, but there was certainly lots of responses.

All the Tom's seemed to be calling from 200-300 yards away, none however, came in for a closer look. Stayed for about 4 hours, probably napped for at least 30 mins, but I'm not complaining, the weather was beautiful and it was a good experience for my first time in the bush.

Next time I have a choice of three different spots and hopefully, luck will be on my side.

Cheers

Glad you enjoyed it.It's very addictive.Sometimes those toms are calling to nearby hens and may already be with a few. This is where patience pays off.Your calling didn't go unheard. The toms will finish with their hens later in the morning, and then come looking for the hens (you) that were calling earlier. This may take from 11:00 A.M. onward. Turkey hunting and lots of patience go together.Enjoy!!! We've got til MAY 31.

Glad you enjoyed your hunt. I got my very first turkey, a young jake on the day after opening day. I hunted very hard the rest of the season (10+ days) but never saw another tom. Saw & chatted with a lot of hens, but the gobblers just seemed to disappear. That season was a real learning experience for me, & I enjoyed every minute of being out in the bush. This season I got my tom on opening morning, & my hunted ended quickly. I still have another tag so we will have to see what the rest of the season brings. I wish you the best of luck getting your bird. Persistence usually pays off.

I can only count on one hand the number of great days I've had hunting that actually ended in a harvest.
Now, ask me how many great days I've had hunting, sitting quietly, stalking, observing, LEARNING, and otherwise enjoying this sport of ours - countless. Far more of the great hunting stories my friends and I share end with, "so I know what I'd do differently next time".
Good for you, having a great day's hunt.

Went out this morning.............cold and raining and no responses. Nice to get up early and get out but way to wet and cold today to stay out to long(for me anyways) will have another crack at her later today once I dry up.

I'm back in to, about one hour ago. No gobbling at all and i'm not getting a wet a$$ for anything. The weather's supposed to be better tomorrow. Good luck.

Did you have a good time? Yes. That means it was a good hunt.

Perseverance and patience are key in turkey hunting!! Especially patience!

Keep at it.... lots of season left... and lots of birds!

Happy hunting.

For a first time effort, you didn't do too badly ... had a good hunt and it seems you were only about 100 yards off a better location !

Advance scouting pays dividends. Keep at it and NO snoozing ! )

Turkey hunting can be very frustrating:eek:. I have been busted by more than one Tom, or a hen for that matter. The best thing, is to go out, have a good time, and learn as much as you can about these birds. years of enjoyment will come from the effort you put into it now. Good Luck:D
