Martini Henry MK1 #'s on Butt Stock

This is my latest find. It appears to be a Martini Henry MK 1 second model. It is dated 1873 on the receiver and 1/74 on the barrel. The distinguishing features are a checkered iron butt plate, brass/bronze axis pin, large cocking indicator lever and the lower sling swivel mounted on the butt stock below the cocking lever. It has matching serial number on the receiver and barrel. The wood is in great condition and the blue is 85%, and the bore is very good. It is missing the ramrod. It also has the Roman numeral XII (12) cut into the stock next to the roundel. I have seen another MK 1 with a VII (7) cut into the stock in the same spot. Does anyone know the significance of these numbers?
