Killed/hunted with your M14/M305/M1A ...

Just a gopher so far, he was a "buck" gopher though. I was watching this one for a whole season, when I finally caught him feeding. I stalked in on him and closed within 70yds, completely unaware of my presence I took aim, took it off safety..and sqeeeezed the trigger. One shot and he ran less than 1ft.

hell, my win 70 7mm remmag in walnut , decked out with bipod, scope rail , rings and scope darn near weighs 9 lbs...... I wouldn't take my m14 sheep hunting.... but for most of the interior of b.c. chasing mulies and mooses..... 9lbs of rifle is no big deal..... and i got a permanent back/pelvis injury.....

i cary a stripped chopped super light 303 enfield for the coastal blacktails but am getting my tricked out m14 ready for the mulies ;) ...... is it deer season yet :runaway:

I would be surprised if it's 7 pounds...the rifle as issued was nine pounds, mag out. You might save a little with a barrel chop...but I would guess even a shorty with a fiberglass stock would weigh pretty close to nine pounds. Mag in, say ten? I see that guns.ru lists it as 5.1 kg loaded, or 11.22 pounds, and wikipedia puts it at 5.2 kg (11.5 pounds.)

So I think to have a 7 pound m14 would be very unusual.

My original ( H&R ) M14 was my main hunting rifle until the Gun Gestapo classed it as a prohib. By that time I had shot 3 moose, 4 caribou, and 2 bears with it. I found it an excellent rifle for hunting.

highlander, if you used factory ammo, what were your favorites for hunting?

I didn't get fancy with it. I just used commercial Remington or Federal ammo, usually 180 grain, and usually core-loct PSP, or similiar. I don't reload.

My first moose was taken with a Imperial 180 gr SaberTip, which was a awesome round, and with it's plastic tip, feeds extremely well in Milsurp rifles designed for FMJ ammo. A great shame it is no longer available.
