I mounted a Bushnell Sportman on my old Cooey M71 a while ago. I have it as far back as it can possibly go and its still not enough. I have to make like Gumby to get a proper view through it and of course that is not very comfortable. Are there some adaptor pieces to help fix this?

Extended rings are available... what is stopping your scope from being moved more to the rear? The front bell on the front ring, or the turret on the rear ring? What mounts are you using, the rear of the scope should not be back any farther than about 1/2 way on the pistol grip... maybe your stock is too long...

Mine has regular rings and bases with a Scopechief on a Win 70A stocked M71. Sounds like the stock is too long to me too. Put the butt in your elbow and grasp the stock. If you can't easily reach the trigger with your finger, the stock is too long.
If it does turn out to be too long, put some masking tape on the stock(a couple or 3 wraps) where you'll be cutting, use a mitre box or saw and cut it through the tape. Good time to add a recoil pad too. If you opt for that, cut off enough to compensate for the thickness of the pad. A bench belt sander is best to fit the pad to the stock dimension. Leave the tape on to prevent buzzing the stock.

A front extension ring will allow the scope to be moved back further
Check the spacing on the screw holes on your bases. It may be possable to swap them and mount the rear base the other way around to give you more room. I am not sure what number your bases are to say if this is even possable on your reciver but some rifles use the same front and rear bases.
Ok guys, I measured the stock as mentioned, my trigger finger reached the trigger with ease. So I scoured the internet and found a set of extension rings. They arrived yesterday and I mounted them late last night. What a major improvement!! They brought the scope up and back quick nicely and no more Gumby moves are required! Thanks for everyones input!!

Extension rings on a rotary dovetail aren't a very good set-up.Normally the front ring holds just about everything, but when you introduce another lever into the equation it's stability is ruined. Any pressure or impact on the side of the front ring wants to turn it in the base. The only thing stopping it is the aluminum tube of the scope itself and a friction fit on the rear mounting screws. Counting on the aluminum scope to hold the position of your steel bases isn't a great plan.
If it were my rifle I'd be looking for some crossbolt rings and a rail. That way you get rid of that extension and get two rings holding instead of one.
I'm pretty sure I understand what your saying. It took a great deal of force to get the front ring in place, its not going anyplace without a tremendous amount of equal force. I picked up the scope on eBay for next to nothing and decided to throw it on the old Cooey. I'll give this setup a try and see how it goes. But thanks a lot for your input I appreciate it.
