Please answer the post only if you KNOW the answer, not if you merely have an opinion...............

Can I safely use H4831 powder DATA with H4831SC POWDER?

I know that IMR4831 data is different, and that is not my question.

Thanks in advance.

Here's what Hodgdon has to say.

http://www.hodgdon.com/extreme.html

H4831SC - Ballistically, this Extreme Extruded powder is the exact copy of H4831. Physically, it has a shorter grain size, therefore, the designation SC or short cut. The shorter, more compact kernels allow the powder to flow through the powder measures more smoothly, helping to alleviate the constant cutting of granules. With the smoother flow characteristics comes more uniform charge weights, while the individual grains orient more compactly, creating better loading density.

I was going to post what Claybuster has quoted but I will add a comment to it. The short cut version is similar to what you would have happen with a powder measure cutting the grains. Same powder but higher loading density means I wouldn't be using Lee powder dipper data or use a powder measure set up for H4831 without first recalibrating by weight for H4831SC. How much of a difference in load density I don't know but at max charges I wouldn't be risking it.

If I had any questions about my understanding of it I would give Hodgdon a phone call and ask.

I haven't seen any loads listing SC specifically even in the Hodgdon manuals that describe the SC powder. This furthers my understanding that it is the same data.

Yes

There is zero difference in burning rates. The SC version does feed a bit better from a volume-type powder measure and can sometimes help to get that extra grain into a case when you really need it but other than that use the same data for both.

Gentlemen, THANK YOU very much!

That is what I "thought" but since I am playing with a .300 RUM in this case, I wanted better than "thought."

I would think H4831 would be too fast burning for the 300 RUM. Other guys on here who shoot that calibre seem to talk about Retumbo and Reloder 25.
