Okay I've finally settle on the gun I'm going to buy now I have to decide what scope I'm going to put on it. When they finally ship the new X Bolt Stainless Stalker in .300 WSM I want to have the scope picked out. I do a wide range of hunting in close bush and open areas so I want a scope that will work for both. I hunt Deer Bear and Moose someday hope to hunt Elk and Ram. I'm thinking a 3X9X40mm. After reading some posts I'm leaning towards Leupold. Let me hear your suggestion.

Cheers Tom

Scope selection has more to do with WHERE you hunt than WHAT you hunt or the rifle/caliber you hunt with.

My favourite scope is the Leupold VXII 2x7. I own two of them as well as two Vari-X IIs in 2x7. It's smaller/lighter than the 3x9 but still offers a lower power for up close while still having lots for longer shots.

X2, on the VXII-2-7x, or if you want a real nice scope, get the VXIII 2.5-8x36mm.:)

although, above scopes are to good for the pry-bar you buy for a gun.

The VXIII's from what I have seen are worth the money over the II's. Supercub makes a good point in that it's the kind of ground you hunt wrt magnification. Beyond... and above Leupie II's and III's is the 4200 Elite series by Bushnell, and the Zeis Conquest for optical quality.

Not trying to start a flame war with all the Leupold fans out there, and I am a happy Leupold owner.

It's just to my eye the 4200 and the conquest for a midrange glass are better than the III's - although I would give Leupold top marks on their warranty.

I've had Bushnell Elite 3000, 3200, 4200 all great scopes for the money. I have had nothing but good service from Bushnell. When returning an older Bushnell Trophy I had that was over 10 yrs old , they replaced it with a new Elite model. They also replaced an old beaten up pair of Bino's I had with a new pair, and my buddy had his over 10 yr old spotting scope replaced with a new one just last yr. all with no questions asked.

My hunting scopes are all 2x7 or 3x8.... I have Nikons and Leupolds, and they both work very well for me.

My best target scope is a Leupold Mark 4 / 3.5x10 M1, and my favorite varmint scope is a Nikon 4.5 x 14 mildot. Both super bright to my eyes.

For hunting, you don't need as much magnification as you think......even out in the open areas......

scopes

My featherweight wears a leupold M8 4x (8 ounces).
My Sendero (custom 300WSM) wears a Nightforce 2.5-10. It all depends on what you are doing with them. I am a fan of Bushnell as well. If you get a variable it shouldn't be over 4x at it's lowest setting, and always carried at it's lowest.

Sightron makes a helluva good scope too, and they are half as much as Leupy's. I have some of both, and as long as you get and SII or SIII, they are great scopes. the SI is fine for 22'. les

I love my Bushnell 4200 series 2.5 to 10. I have two Leupold 2.5 to 8's but I also think the Bushnell has better glass. I just bought a 6500 series 2.5 to 16 and it is even better. I have the mil dot and it is so clear and the really good thing is they offer it with 42 mm lens or the 50 mm lens. Mine is the 42 mm and it only weighs 1 oz more than the 2.5 to 10. It is probably due to the tube being 30mm rather than 1 inch. Physically it is the same size as the 2.5 to 10. It's sort of like the best of both worlds. It also has parallax adjustment on the side.
Take good care,
Dave

Leupold VXII 3-9x40 w/ LR duplex, or a VXIII 3.5-10x40 w/ B&C reticle

Two excellent choices. Since the VX11s got the MC4 coatings in 2004 they are awful close to the VX111s in brightness. I'm still long on my VX111s but if price matters you wouldn't be giving up all that much. There are some subtle differences between Leupold models that make some sopes a better fit for individual shooters, but these two work for just about everyone, on just about any rifle. I really like the B&C recticle, though I've used it more on coyotes than big game. A 7mm STW tends to make that sort of thing frivilous.
