I just managed to get my hands on a NP arms 30-06 made in England bolt action , anyone have any exp with this type of gun ? I just found the website and it is Churchill arms not np , here are some pics.
From what I can understand they seem to be a close cousin to the k98. I will do a rang e day and see what happens .

Its a converted M1917 Enfield - lots were done after the war by companies such as BSA, Churchill, etc. NP stands for Nitro Proofed...

I have a similar rifle, a P-14 sporterized by BSA:

A prev. owner had even installed a Timney trigger. A bit on the heavy side but quite accurate.

Nitro proofed meaning ?..... ..

Tested with smokeless (nitroglycerine-based) powder. It's a standard marking on such rifles, although by WWI, black powder was obsolete for military small arms and the 30-06 cartridge was never loaded with BP anyway, unlike the .303, which began as a BP cartridge.

My BSA P-14 (.303 cal.) also has the proof charge (c-41 gns., IIRC, which would mean Cordite) and the bullet weight (215) stamped on it, even though I believe they had switched to the 174 gn. spitzer by that time.

Enfield M1917 .30-06 sporters...........

Nice rifle!

I've got a Eddystone mfg P-17 .30-06 in a sporter Bishop stock with iron sites. It's a very heavy rifle compared to modern factory sporters we see today.

I shot it a couple Sundays ago off the bench at 50 yards with some of that econo Igman 150 gr SP ammo and it gave respectable groups. I might just get it drilled & tapped for Weaver bases so I can throw on a scope. I bet with that & working up a load with a heavier bullet it will give pretty good 100 yard groups.

You should be pleased with the results when you shoot yours......

I hope to have some good results with it . The guy I got it from said that it was a sniper rifle . I will post pics when I have results .

Thanks for the explanation for the np .

Does he work for the CBC? They think any rifle with a scope is a very dangerous "Sniper Rifle" capable of killing innocents within a range of 2 miles.

Seriously ........ It's a sporting rifle, not a sniper rifle. :)

:sniper: :sniper: :sniper: Ah, the unbridled enthusiasm of the press- often unencumbered by comprehension!

Actually, wasn't the P-14 sometimes used as a sniper rifle by the Brits in WW1 due to better accuracy than the standard SMLE MkIII? I'm not sure about the US and the P-17, though.

In any case, Greenman, as it was sporterized by Churchill Arms, there is no way to know if yours was ever used for sniping. You still have a nice rifle, though. And if you ever decide you need more power, you could rechamber and rebore to 35 Whelen, or rebarrel to just about anything. I think 505 Gibbs here on CGN had one in that very calibre.

Let me re-tell that for clairity resons alone . When I asked him what kind of gun it was (meaning the make, calibre etc ) he responded with "it's a sniper rifle made by NP arms" .

This rose a few questions by me because I had never heard of NP arms before and why would a hunter use a sniping rifle for deer in Nova Scotia ( due to the fact most of the provence is covered in brush you can't see 20 feet into ) and where the hell would he get a sniping rifle anyway . Initally I thought he had some chopped bum version of a .303 made under some minor factory somewhere and someone sold him on the fact it was a "sniper rifle" because it had a scope. Either way I have it now and can't wait to play with my new toy

Oh and that would be a BIIIIGGG no for me working for the CBC :D:D.
