X2, which is why I acquired an '08 a short while ago. I was thinking of a custom project and settled on the '08 action as the basis and 7x57 as the caliber of choice. The '08 I picked up has a few minor 'dings' in the wood but the metal work is mint, action in the 'white', has all the sling attachments as well as most of the original leather sling. An added bonus was it shoots 'well' with the original barrel so I planned to go with that as well. The barrel is 29" or 30" so my basic plan was/is to replicate a much shorter carbine length version of the original, with a few changes. 'Nice' wood, trigger unit or work over, magazine alterations and speciality scope mounts. I received a lot of adverse comments for even thinking of altering the '08 and haven't 'touched' it yet, but it's in the plans.

It is my understanding that the rifle was made ca. 1926. 8X57J. Bore has seen better days. The rifle obviously had a hard life, got knocked around. As I mentionned, it came from Sri Lanka with a load of Indian FNs. It had .30-06 painted in white on the right side of the stock; luckily no one had taken that seriously. There is a little silver plate with initials on the right side of the butt. Maybe that was put there by the person who took the rifle to the subcontinent back before the War. I have yet to fire it. If it does not shoot acceptably, a rebore would be appropriate - 9mm, .35, 9.3, .375, etc. The stock has no significant damage, I think it would respond well to stripping, steaming the dents, recutting the checkering, and refinishing. There is some pitting, stockline on the receiver, etc, but no serious rust. Sort of surprising considering where it came from, and the use and abuse it suffered.

These are the classic Mauser hunting rifles I love....Rigby's!
If only someone would make a modern left-hand version that retains the stripper clip loading slot, and incorporates integral Weaver bases machined into the top of the receiver.
Oh yeah, and a Win 70 style safety and floorplate.

Oops! Sorry for giving you guys the wrong idea!
Those aren't my guns, I just "borrowed" the pictures from a UK auction site.
I would love to have two Rigby's (left-handed of course) but I'm not rich! Those guns are the epitome of a classic hunting rifle to me.
I would love to design and build my dream hunting rifles based on that concept but with the addition of the features that I already mentioned.
If I had the money I would go to the States and learn how to be a machinist and a gunsmith.
It really sucks to have the dream and not have the means to realize it.
Money can buy happiness!

One more alteration I neglected to mention that I'd like to do is modify the bolt to a butterknife style.
I've posted these before, but I love posting pics of my guns, so heres my 1908 Mauser custom, I'm not hijacking the thread, just giving you ideas for what action to use, and what can be done with it (I purchased it like this)

That's the bolt handle configuration I have in mind for mine. I plan to keep the original open sights and replicate the top wood as well. Very nice tkvooo.

Thats really nice. Do you know the type of safety that's on it to clear scope?
