Well today was the day for my first ever shoot. I packed up my brand new baby eagle 9mm and my S&W .22 cal revolver purchased on gun nutz pre owned. As I drove down to the range my shoulders were tensing up my heart started racing thinking about all the things I needed to do so I didnt end up hurting myself or others. When I arrived I could hear the banging of others shooting there firearms. I watched through the window for a bit trying to get myself to walk through the range door. Finally I realized if I dont shoot these things then I have to sell them and I know that wasnt an option, so I took a deep breath and walked on in like I knew what I was doing. I pushed in my first 9mm clip trying to remember all that I needed to do. Once I was ready I cracked back the slide and I was in business. Slowly I squeezed and then.....BANG!!!!! Wow what a neat feeling I was scared thrilled and panicked all in one second. To make this already long story short I ended up shooting about 100 rounds of 9mm. I found the desert eagle very easy on the recoil, not to heavy at all, excellent on the accuracy and not that I have alot to compare to but the trigger was feather light. A real cool gun indeed. What I wasnt counting on was the stiffness of the clips when loading and my thumb is damn sore. So after finishing with my 9mm and feeling like 50 d cent or one of those rap star dudes I went on to the .22 K17. All I can say is I loved it. I was supprised at how heavy it was compared to my 9mm but Zero recoil and just a dream to shoot. I popped off another 100 or so rounds of .22's and then I was exzhausted. I packed up all my goodies and headed home with a feeling of accomplishment. I already am planning to go back next Friday and I cant wait. I guess I am now an official HAND GUN NUT!!! Now to do my first clean on my toys. Thanks to all for your advice on guns and ranges it has all helped. Oh and The Shooting Edge where I was at today has really done some nice reno's as well congrats to them.

Congratulations on your new quest to the range!

I am a gun nut who is still very new and very wet behind the ears; none of my family shot and I have been self-taught with help from board members. It can be unnerving to go to the range and trying to know the etiquette while learning at the same time!

Some ranges have random rules (i.e one shot in a mag at a time  ) that you have to watch out for.

Not to mention I'm a lousy shot, I gotta work on that!

Keep on shootin'! :)

Cool story of your first range visit. I remember mine ... I only had a .22 pistol, but never having shot before, or even having been around guns being fired, I had no idea what to expect. Glad it went well for you, and I hope you can keep enjoying the shooting sports for the rest of your life.

One little nitpick, though, before someone else gets ya for it ... a box with a spring loaded follower that contains ammunition, as for your pistol, is properly called a "magazine", or "mag". A "clip" is different implement for feeding ammunition. You'll find lots of people cringe at this, and a few other firearms terminology errors. It's a pet peeve of mine, too. Hopefully this brief tutorial saves you from being nagged in person by someone else who is annoyed by this error. ;) :D

Happy shooting! :ar15:

MAG it is then. Either way the things are still tough to load.:)

Very well written - I think most of us wil admit to the anxiety of the first time or two on the range by ourselves. I know in my neck of the woods, the "Fudds" were often less than welcoming to newbies.

Your thumbs will toughen up, really!

Welcome to our little club, of people who love to shoot.

I must admit that nobody in my family and extended family has ever shot or even likes guns but I went ahead anyway and they have seemed to be more accepting of it as they see how much fun I am having in both the research of guns and now the actual shooting of the guns. My goal is to try and get one of them to go shooting with me in the future so they can see that guns are not big bad scary things. We just had a shooting here in Varsity the other day that did'nt help matters but if I can show them that not everyone with a gun is an idiot then I will feel like I have done my bit.
