I have been researching different bolt action rifles in 30-06 and .338 Win Mag. Changed my mind about a lever action 45-70 for now. I would very much like to see other people's opinions on the best 30-06/.338 Win Mag for around $800. I want one rifle that does deer, bear and moose.

TIA:)

stick to the .30-06. nothing you will ever shoot in ontario will need a 338mag, hell nothing east of alberta is going to need much more then a 7-08

I like a remington SPS Stainless for a rifle in that price range. lots left over for optics

700 SPS hinged floorplate or 700 SPS Detach Mag for under $600...30-06 gets the nod for the reason Amphibious mentioned.

30-06 or 338 win mag?

I have a couple of both and have hunted for 48 years now. Unless you live in B.C. the Yukon or at the foot of the Rockies in Alberta the 30-06 is all you will ever need. Currently I have 47 rifles and several shotguns but then again I enjoy shooting and hunting, either at the range or in the field. I live in B.C. and I've used the 30-06 to take Mule Deer, Whitetails, Black Bear, Moose, and Elk. I've used 338 win mag to take all those I've mentioned along with Grizzly. If I was you, given where you live, go to 30-06. It will serve you well, you can use it for your whole life and on a practical basis the ammunition is cheaper than the 338 win mag and the recoil is much less unless you install a good recoil pad and in some cases a muzzle brake. I have 5 kids who all hunt and in my view and I know a lot of people have opinions of this the 30-06 is the best all round rifle a true hunter can use. Just my 2 cents. :)

Same here, get a .30-06 I have both, and hardly EVER use the .338
Ammo is running super expensive right now for .338 I paid $53.00 for a box of federal 225 gr Speer hot-cor. Just average ammo. The .30-06 runs about 25 bucks for similar ammo. You can shoot a ton more at the range and not beat the hell out of yourself. I really believe the .338 is overkill for most anything on this continent other than the great bears.

I own a ZG47 BRUNO 30-06 I never use. It's a one holer and a collector piece but I end up using something else.Shot a lot of deer with the .338 as well as elk, bear[griz +blk],moose and caribou. It tore up less meat than my .270 and animals didn't go far after a hit..................always leaving a blood trail Stevie Wonder could follow! How much shooting experience do you have? The 338 may prove to be a handfull to someone that isn't used to the recoil.

Do you handload? .... 338 can be expensive to buy, while on the other hand 30/06 is alot less expensive. Handloading can keep cost down.

Generally, but not always, magnum rifles are heavier than standard calibers.

If this is your first big game rifle ......... 30/06 is a very good start.

A 30-06 is a great all round hunting round. The 338 is more specialized. I own both and the 30-06 gets a lot more use the the 338.

The .338 is a fine cartridge for someone who hunts moose and big bears. Many find the recoil objectionable, but often this is from people who are not used to heavy recoil, or whose rifles are too light. The .338 shines on heavy game, but it is not as versatile as the .30/06. Under most conditions the .30/06 will handle any North American hunting scenario, but if following a wounded grizzly into the willows is in your plans, the .338 isn't enough either. They don't make guns big enough for that game.

I think most folks would find that in circumstances where a .30/06 or .300 magnum wasn't enough, they would discover that rather than a .338, a .375 of some flavor (H&H, Dakota, Ruger, Steyr, Ultra, or Weatherby) is the next logical step. If someone wants to chime in about the 9.3X62, then yes that works too. I believe these cartridges produce real world terminal ballistics in terms of depth of penetration and wound volumes that are are a measurably greater than those produced by the .30/06. We sort of run the risk of an apples and oranges comparison here, but if each cartridge is loaded with a bullet weight that allows the cartridge to produce 2500 fps at maximum pressure, there is a greater difference between the .375 and the .338 than there is between a .30/06 and the .338.

Another definite vote for the .30-06! .338 is a beast to shoot regularly except by a few local heros found on this site who measure manhood in foot lbs of teeth loosening recoil.:nest:

If it's your first big game gun the 06 will be plenty. If you've got something for Deer already the 338 makes an awsome Moose gun.

Not to start something but I think there is a lot more difference between the 338 and any 30 cal. than the 338 and 375. A good 250 gr. 338 bullet with its high S/D works extremely well and penetrates till the cows come home. Don't get me wrong, I love my 375s as well. In fact will be shooting my 375 and 378 in about 2 hours.

split the difference and go with a 300 Win Mag....shoots flatter than a 338 or the '06, packs more energy than the '06 and with a 200 grainer I'll bet it's really close to the 338/225gr in energy....someone can look up the numbers for us...

Funny how people will go through3 boxes of heavy duck/goose loads in a day of waterfowling but can't tolerate a couple rounds of .338? A BRNO O/U in .375H+H was like a 12 ga.Mine's magnaported and a decelorator recoil pad.Recoil like a 12 ga.Because one is experianced and hunts with a magnum has squat to do with one's ego.I do lots of hunting with my .250 Sav in Rem 700 Classic and my 6.5X55 Whatever I happen to be holding at the time.Bear elk and moose go down a lot more decisively with the .338 You may not need it but it works just fine........Harold

A .300 mag with a 200gr is just an imitation of where the .338 starts. You'll see a lot more .338's in the Kodiak Islands than .300 magsDon't get me wrong I also use a .308 Norma Mag a better rd than the Win short necked copy but it's no .338 by a long shot.............JMO.......Harold [Iuse handloaded 225gr in my .338]

We I really don't care about recoil (used to compete in powerlifting and still throw around a ton of weight at the gym so my shoulders have some good buffers) LOL and I don't mind paying extra for the ammo so maybe .338 Win Mag might be the choice. I hate this! LOL
