Dings in brass from AR

Finally got to the range and tried out my new AR, I really love it! What I did notice is that the ejected cases have some consistent markings/dents around the case shoulder. I have attached a pic but not sure how well it will show up.

I am thinking this is from the case hitting the deflector, but thought I would ask here. Is this normal?

when i could shoot my hk's, the brass used to have a HUGE dent in the middle, .....223 or 308.no way to reuse them again

Don't shoot it anymore! Its exstremely dangerous. Send it down to me and I'll see if there is anything I can salvage from it to send back to you.
Those are deflector dents, nothing to worry on.

They can only be safely used if you iron the dent out from the inside with a 50,000+psi iron....

a heavy buffer will slow things down a bit and MAY cut down on the dents. I say "MAY" because im not sure....anybody know for sure??

Yes.

The dents will be caused by impact with the rear edge of the ejection port, or the case deflector, or both. You should be able to see brass smears or even slight chipping of the finish where the cases are hitting.

In some guns, changing extractor spring force or ejector spring force by trimming springs or adding spacers/O-rings can adjust the path taken by the cases. It can also seriously affect your reliability, so if you are going to do it, make sure you have spare parts and have the opportunity to really test the reliability of the modified product.

There is absolutely no reason to worry about reloading those cases.

I am going to try a stiffer extractor insert and see if this alters the deflection pattern. Will advise. Thanks for the feedback.

Not only can they be reloaded... With the price and availability of .223 ammo these days they will likely have to be reloaded

Thanks everyone. I figured they were still safe, but I since I only minor in metallurgy, I figured I'd ask the pros.

I called my dealer and he wanted $1,000+ for an entry level "iron". It went to over $2,000 for anything considered fun.

I must admit, I asked myself what the hell you were talking about when I first read it. 50,000 PSI... that's ultra-high level hydraulics or the kind of pressure you get inside the barrel of a rif... oh. I get it.
