The day started off as s**t - the head cold I though I was starting to shake yesterday came back with a vengeance this morning, and I found out that small increase in height my slippers give me (I have a cold - leave me alone :p ) is just enough for me to crack my skull against the hanging light fixture in the dining room.
Anyway, this makes up for it. :D

All the S&W #3 frames were made prior to 1898 (making certain calibers antique) but this one was one of the last 550 out the door, making the actual date of sale not until a couple years before the outbreak of WWI. The frame and cylinder have different numbers (which I'm told was common for the last batches of guns as they used the remaining parts) and are aged evenly. Barrel is 8" long - bore has a couple of very small speckles, but no real pitting and the rifling is strong. Caliber appears to be either 45 Schofield or 45 Webley - I'm leaning to the later, as the revolver has British proof marks.

A loaded 45 Colt is too long, so I'm going to trim a few back to see if the Webley or Schofield length fits better. Bore measures .450 in the lands and .454 in the grooves, so I'm going to try and see if a standard .452-453 45LC bullet will "bump up" properly. Really impressed with this old beauty, and the odd characteristics (8" barrel, chambering, proof marks) combined with the fact it was in the right place at the right time to possibly have seen some unofficial action in WWI, makes it a keeper.

Anyone recommend a leather rig for it? At the moment I'm leaning towards a Californian rig by RedDog Leather.
Californian_Rig_Enhanced.jpg

He quoted me $225 for the rig above (although I think I'd make the holster a crossdraw due to the barrel length).

Now thats a Great Hangun in a Great Caliber.

I load 5.5 grs of Trail boss behind a 250 Gr Keiths .454 sized bullet in my 45 Schofield guns.
You should find out what it was orignally Chambered in But 45 Schofields are very easy to load for with .454 Keith bullets you will do great things with that gun.
That S&W will just make one ragged hole at 25 Yds with the right bullets and powder load.
Its got Ajustable target sites to!
More of you guys should hunt down that Trail Boss and try it.
Really a fun powder to use.
My 1892 wilkinson Cycles and Shoots 45 Schofields but i load a special .458 Dia bullet for it as its a 476 Cal gun with 460 Chamber throats and bore.

your gun sounds perfect for 250 gr .454 Keith Bullets.

 I didn't even notice that until you mentioned it. I think the front sight is a replacement though.

The Winchester 45LC brass I have has a .054" rim and is still tight on the face. It will cycle, but just (and of course, it has to be trimmed). It's looking more and more like it's 455 Webley - the ejector rises enough to eject a case that's 0.9" or so.

Anyone want to sell a couple pieces of 455 brass so I can try them for fit?

I have one that is british proofed it is in 450 boxer I have been able to use 455 hornady brass and just shorten it a little I also use .454 keith bullets and 777 powder If you ever want to sell it I'd love a pair .

I think this one will be staying with me for a while Dez. Can I ask where you got the 455 Hornady brass? I've got a pound of Triple7 and I'm loading for 45LC now anyway, so all I need to round up are some cases.

Coulda been Replaced on purpose! the orignal sites are alot lower.
Someone was Shooting that Puppy and didnt want it shooting a foot high like these tend to do.

Use the longer Domion 455 Cases if 45 Schofields rims are to Thick
Not the short 455 Hornady cases.
Dez has to use em cause of his 450 short Chambers But your gun has nice big Chambers!!
You want that Bullet as far forward to the forceing cone for good Accuracy.

Id thin the forward side of the 45 Schofield cases rims if it were mine so they Clear nicely, then load em up.
I got some Long 455 Diomion Colt cases i can sell you if you have troble finding them.
But the 45 Schofield Starline cases is the way to go.
take 100 to a Machine shop and get a small amount removed from the front of the Rims face.
so there the same thickness as the 455 Cases. ;)

If yours is 455 MKI the longer case length Kerry Jenkinson sells them made out of 45Colt brass that he has shortened and thinned the rim on. PM me if you would like a couple to try and I'll stick them in an envelope

I trimmed down a couple 45LC brass to 1.1" (gonna have to get the drill attachment for my case trimmer :kickInTheNuts: ) - looks like they'll fit with a 200gr pill on top. I'm gonna load up a couple tomorrow and try them with 777.
She's a beaut Dez. Target rear sight and a taller front sight as well. Will yours fit a longer case Dez? Would an empty 45Colt case fit in the chambers?

And I have another question for you - what process are you using to load 50cf ammo for your Remington 1871? Just bought one this afternoon, and I want to start gathering up components for it.

I can't use longer cases mine was chambered for 450 boxer I have to trim back the Hornady 455MKII cases to get them to chamber . I find the 777 quite potent even in the short cases maybe start off light with a little cream of wheat filler and slowly work up to a full case? You will love yours mine is one of the most acurate pistols I own.

What a looker!!

I wonder if you can get info on the origional owner from the ser ##'s I know colt can do this sometimes.
It woulld be a neat piece of history to have, imagine if you could even find some old picture of the origional owner.

Are you going to blue or brown it or just keep her au naturale.

Its a REAL dead mans gun!!

You can request a letter with the production dates and who it shipped to - things like that. Just have to send off my request (it's only $30). For the time being it's staying au naturale. Since the chambers were reamed out to accept 45 Schofield (I imagine they were 455 to start) she's more of a shooter than a true collector's item, so someday I may look at getting her restored - have the frame and barrel reblued and the trigger and hammer color case hardened.

Very nice find indeed. Congrats. I've never been into handguns myself, but I'm finding it very tempting, seeing all these great pics, not to pick up one of these myself. I was first tempted some time ago when Kirk picked up that nice Schoefield, but I've been seeing many nice antique gandguns on here since. May have to sell off one or two of the Wincheters and pick one up!

Matt

Have a look at this beauty wish I had the money right now about $8000.00 aught to get her here

FYI, I had a guy I "met" over at "The High Road" forum named bigbadguns make me a really nice custom rig for my Colt 1851 Navy. I don't know if he has a break top S&W pattern but its worth checking him out as his prices are generally quite excellent. If you check the photos on his site my rig is the black Western open top on a thick belt with diamonds and spades metal parts. He really did excellent work I thought.

I'll put on my chaps when I get home and post a photo of the rig. I promise to wear pants ;)
