Yes very possible. The 6/284 is larger in all dimensions so that the reamer could be run in most likely without taking anything off the chamber end of the barrel. There could be a problem with the existing neck/throat dia and length that would necessitate a .250" or so cut off the back of the barrel.
A standard factory barrel 24" is really too short for the full potential of this cartridge and it is a real barrel burner. I had a 416 stainless barrel, after 700 shots, I had 7 inches of cracked/checked barrel ahead of the chamber. 1 inch of erosion per 100 rounds.

I have one built on a Rem 788. Re-chambered from a 6mm Rem, but a 243 will work the same. As mentioned, longer barrels work better for the big sixes (I also shoot a 240 Gibbs and a 6mm Ackley). The 24" barrel does work, but longer is better. Still, it lets you get into the cartridge, develop loads, etc, and if you decide you like it, once the barrel is worn, you can re-barrel with a longer, perhaps tighter twist barrel. - dan
