Judge this bear

I enlarged it a bit. Hard to tell but my guess would be 5ft 350lbs black bear.

did you stick 2 5' blackbears together to get that weight?

seriously, start putting your bears on a scale, you'll see that most people grossly over estimate their weight.

hard to tell without a broadside and a gait to estimate length or weight. frontal views really are #### for judging.

thats why this photo is so intersting and makes a good "guess" photo..as it IS hard to judge length from this angle..and all ya see is head...and neck..

I agree its pretty hard to think of a 350 pound 5 foot black bear..

but it is a fun way to keep coming back to..and makes a 14 hour nites shift somewhat less boring....geee only 10 more hours...lol

I'll take a shot He is like someothers mentioned in the 300- 350 range and does not really look like a Black but seeing photos and video of Blacks in different parts of Canada they seem to all have slight different characteristics. Size, shape ,nose length. etc. Tough to judge this one. would have been easier if you stood beside him and put the camera on timer.LOL

I think that's a nice black bear. Square muzzle, heavily muscled, creased forehead all indicate a mature animal. I believe that a grizzly, from that angle would appear to have a rounder head, and I would expect to see contrasting color or texture between the facial hair and the body hair due to the length of the long guard hairs on a grizzly's body. Often a black bear will have a collar around his neck and shoulders making him appear larger than he really is. Would I shoot him? Oh yeah!

Just a guess. What's your guess even though you don't have a broadside and gait? Surely not 175lbs?

The enlarged photo makes him look a little more "blocky" and blocky is good. I still am not convinced he is a giant, though.:)

I'd liek to see where his belly is in relation to his legs.:)

Big black bears have heads that look small relative to body - this is a black bear ...NOT big - average and around 225 - 275 lbs maybe

Some of you guys are way off. I have posted this bear before. It is a grizzly.

It's so easy to screw up, be careful of what you are shooting at.

deleted, my post came in after ROA's. It was pretty obviously a grizzly to me....but of course I can say that now ;)

Good photos Republic, how pissy was he about you being so close to his property?
Also are you in a jetboat for the first pic?

Cheers

BS --- thats a Black Bear ... we have no Grizzly in South Eastern Ontario!

:)

Goes to show how damn hard it can be to judge a bear..and to make sure that you really look it over before shooting. A couple of weeks ago near here a grizzly was mistaken for a black bear and shot by a hunter, who promptly fled..They are still looking for him.

Easy to say for me now, but the first thing I thought was "that looks like a grizzly". As for size, I suck at estimating a bear's size.

Its the color it throws you off. I was reluctant to post cause I couldn't tell if it was a grizz or a black bear with that head on pic. When in doubt don't shoot...
