Usually I clean my 300WM by soaking the barrel with Hoppes#9 let it set for 5 min or so then scrub with a brush and patch till they come clean. Repeat this until the first patch comes clean. That might be 6 or 8 reps of this. Now Im at God knows how many reps and the first patch still looks like a chimney brush. Its a Bevon King match SS barrel. Does Hoppes have a shelf life and not work well anymore? The bottle is a few years old. Does carbon leech out of steel after awhile?

I never had much luck cleaning rifles with Hoppes # 9. It works great on shotguns. Try using Butches Bore Shine. Gets rid of powder fowling and removes copper at the same time.

Moosehunter I had the same problem with my .223 rem Rem 700 stainless would leave Hoppes Benchrest overnite after, using copper brush, wipe out clean then coat barrel ith Hoppes and leave over night, first patch was black must be powder build up, no green like you get with copper fouling. I bought some Butches and did the same routine I would wash my copper brush under very hot water and dry. After two applications barrel seems okay now
I have been testing loads with RL15,Varget and VT 540 I am now testing these powders to see which one is giveing the problem.

You might want to try a product called 'Wipeout' which is a foam bore cleaner.
Basically you plug one end of the barrel, apply and let it soak for a few hours, before brushing and patching it out. It is great at removing copper fouling as well as the carbon deposits

Hoppes smells nice, and is a pretty decent "all around" gun cleaner, but it's really not so great for bores. It doesn't strip out any copper, for instance.

USe WIPEOUT and you won't go back to anything else, unless you are in a hurry. If in a hurry, Barnes CR-10 is an aggrevie bore cleaner, that works fast, but is a bit stinky.
