Anyone ship a handgun back to S&W?

Get a temp att to take your pistol to the post office and send it with their most secure signature service. Whan applying for the ATT just let the guy know that its being sent for repairs.

Or, have a courier come to your house and pick it up. A litte more expensive but less hassle and faster shipping.

Contact Smith & Wesson before you do anything.

it's easiest to send it to a Canadian S&W warranty center and let them send it back to S&W in the USA. that's what I did with my M&P

FYI - if you're shipping the pistol out of the country you will need to contact DFAIT and get a temp export permit. Its not a complicated process and it can be done online.

message me if you need help

I'm guessing the process is similar if you wanted to send a gun to he US to get work and modifications done? Could there be any problems getting it back over the border if changes have been made?

On a similar note, is it possible to send my Model 19 to S&W for re-plating? It's a nickel-plated model but the plating has come off in parts of the cylinder. How much will it cost approximately?

If you are in BC, you might want to try M. D. Charleton who is the western S & W repair center. I have had work done there and it was well done.

Wortner Gun Works in Chatham ON is the authorized S&W Warranty centre for eastern Canada. They can be reached toll free at 1-888-998-2000. email: wortnergunworks@bellnet.ca

M.D. Charlton is also an authorized warranty centre. They are out in BC. Here is what I have on them:
M.D. Charlton Co. Ltd.,
Ph-250-652-5266
Fax-250-652-4700

Both places do top notch work. I lean towards Wortner's myself because I have known George for years and he is an incredible gunsmith. He's old, cranky, opinionated and outspoken. Just like me except he can fix what I screw up.

My 586 needs a new barrel and possibly a cylinder. Is the guy in BC able to do that?

Yes, I've had Murray do exactly this work on an M29. On S&Ws his work is top notch. As for the replating question posted, check with both warranty centers, I believe you'll find that they farm out their plating. If you think it is a warranty issue, phone S&W first, and see what they tell you to do. - dan
