Dry firing a Savage MKII?

So I finally decided on a Savage MKII BV for my first rimfire bolt gun. I have a coulpe of old Cooey single shot bolts but you have to manually #### them before firing.

So my question is the MKII safe to dry fire? I am not looking to 1000's of dry firing practice but more interested in how to store the rifle without the hammer cocked?

Just put an empty fired cartridge in the chamber prior to squeezing the trigger.:D

Just put an empty fired cartridge in the chamber prior to squeezing the trigger.:D

Another option is to hold the trigger back while closing the bolt.
 
I've read that most rimfire's don't allow the firing pin to connect unless there's a round chambered. the older rifles tho did have this problem and the pins would shatter or some such, creating a costly repair bill.

using a dummy round could help and no doubt your manual will state what you should and should not do. :)
 
I will have to re-read the manual but on my first read it didn't say anything about dry firing and or how to store with the hammer down.
 
Just searched these forums and i'm sure you'll find lots of advise whether to dry fire or not!? :) .......everyone's got their own opinion.......
