S&W 629 DA problem

Hi,

I am having a problem with my gun which works just fine single action but will no longer fire double action. The hammer does not come back nearly far enough and hits the firing pin with little force which barely leaves a mark on the primer. Is there anything I should look at or is it time to take a trip to S&W for repair. If so who should I get in touch with to send it to (western Canada preferably)?

The first thing to check on your 629 is mainspring tension. Remove the grips and you will see a screw on the front strap of the gripframe. Using a properly fitted screwdriver, make sure that the screw is not loose. It should be as tight as you can turn it by hand. If that isn't the problem, you will probably have to get it looked at by a pro.

That was the only thing I knew to do so I had a look at it already. It appears to be fully tightened. hanks Pat.

How Old is it . Does it have the intregal lock . I have seen them shift and muck up the trigger function . Just a thought.

Definitely something to have a look at. I think I have some info and diagrams about how to remove it so I will check to be sure that it doesn't appear to be getting in the way of functioning. Thanks!

Thanks Joe,

I am afraid that it will come to that. I guess I can take it as an opportunity to get it tuned up a bit and get the trigger worked on. It always felt a little crunchy to me.

Then take off the side plate(3 screws and a wee bit of gentle prying) and look for whatever is stopping the hammer. Sometimes the innards just need to be cleaned and lubed.

So I don't have to worry about stuff jumping out if I am careful? I'll give this a go tomorrow when I get a chance to take the time and do it right.

I would be reluctant to remove the sideplate unless I really knew what i was doing--you run the risk of bending it. I'm guessing that happened to my 25-2 sometime before I owned it, since there is a very small but noticeable misalignment of the sideplate and frame near the bottom screw. The screw is also marred a little bit from using the wrong type of screwdrive. In my opinion, you won't be able to fix the issue by doing this and run a not insignificant risk of doing damage to your revolver. If the strain screw is tight and you've had the issue with different types of factory ammo, and there's nothing externally obvious like a gunked up firing pin I'd send it away.

Don't dry fire much. Prefer to put lead down the pipe <g>.

Partially disassembled the firearm by removing the sideplate as per some excellent instructions I was pointed at and cleaned with a mix of WD40 and gun oil. I carefully swabbed out the innards as much as I could while working the action slowly and continuing to alternated between applying new solution and cleaning it up. Once I got it as clean as I could without taking it completely apart I litely oiled everything then swabbed it down once again. This left a nice film of clean oil on everything. Put it back together and off to the range today.

It works just like it is brand new in DA. Even the SA is better than I ever recall. No more gritty / grindy / crunchy noise /feel. Woo-hoo!!
 
DO NOT EVER PRY OFF THE SIDE PLATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The proper method to remove the side plate from a S & W Revolver is to
1. Loosen the main spring screw,
2. Remove the 3 (or 4 depending on how old you revolver is)side plate screws, 3. Turn the revolver side plate down and gently tap on the grip frame with a non maring tool untill it falls off!
4. NEVER PRY

X2 on prying off a side plate-My blood boiled when I saw that. They would sure love you at armourers school. I have had to fix or try to fix to many S&W revolvers where some dolt pried off the sideplate and tweaked it.
Remove the sideplate screws and do not mix them and gently tap the frame grip area and poof off it will come. To reinstall press fit by HAND and put the screws back in their respective holes.
