I suppose it depends on what you mean by "older". The H&rRs made relatively recently use a large headed screw to attach the forend to the barrel.
Well, there was something holding the forearm to the barrel, but pulling downward on it was all it eventually took to remove it, easy-as-pie. I was hesistant as to which direction to start grabbing on it, so I originally did so side-to-side. Embarassingly easy once I figured it out.
Even older ones emply a springloaded catch. The forend pops on, pops off.
Exactly.
There may be screws running lengthwise from the rear. These hold the forend "iron" to the forend, have nothing to do with holding the forend to the barrel.
Fully noted - this comment gave me the confidence to pull the forearm downwards, by the way - thank you.
Where is the opening latch on the receiver? At the rear of the barrel is a lug with the ejector. At the front end of this lug, there will be a semi-circular groove runnng across the lug. This lug engages a pin through the front of the receiver.
Unsure about all this - though I'm usually a jargon-junkie. After popping-off the forearm, and positioning the barrel into the receiver in the broken-open position, it took very little fiddling to get the barrel into the receiver. I "locked-up" the barrel back to the receiver, and then replaced the forearm. Smooth, easy, and excellent. Thank you a great deal. Takedown afterward was a breeze, too.
