Hi What kind of 3 shot group can a guy resonably expect from a Mini-14 I ran some 55Gr Remington PMPs through @ 25Yds I was 1in. Low @ 100Yds I was 1in. high Does this seem right? I could get first 2 shots to group and the third would stray a couple inches. I was allowing 3min. between shots. I also tried some Russian 62Gr. HP they performed the same but struck target @ 25 & 100 2in. lower than the 55s.
Am I in the BALLPARK?
THANKS
Pete......

I used to have a similar gun hemidart, key being used to. That gun broke my heart cause I just loved the concept and simplicity but it wouldn't shoot for s%$t literally. On one occasion I remember hitting my steel gong 5 times out of 100rnds :( Then shooting the same gong 42 out of 50 times with my Marlin 94 in 357 at the same distance. This might not be exactly typical of all 180 series minis but it sure left me hesitant. I would really like to test run one of the new production minis.

I shot about 12 groups with both types of ammo 1st shot was good second allways went a little high (within 2in. @ 100) and the third would be 3-4in. mostly high but any direction? By the way that Russian .223 worked flawlessly it is almost gone.
Thanks
Pete...

I shot a few boxes of the russian stuff today out of my Ruger bolt action. It shoots a good group out of the bolt gun. Do you shoot off a rest? Is there any chance that as you continue to shoot, you slide the gun further down the rest following the recoil, so that by the 3rd shot there is more weight out to the end of the stock? I'm sure there is a science to mini-14 tuning and accuracy, there's been so many of those guns sold over the years.

If my memory is correct, the only way to get a reasonable group with mini 14's is to drop half a dozen of the rifles in a pile....that is about the only way to get a reasonable group with mini 14's.

I would really like to get my hands on one that shoots well, like a new Ranch Rifle or something. I want a rugged, simple, 223 semi that I can throw behind the truck seat or carry on the tractor for shooting gophers, coyotes, crows, magpies, etc. I mean the nearest non-restricted semi is way too much $$$ for what I want.

I havent read anything special about the "Target" models either, they're just not the most accurate gun.If you're looking for a precision semi, AR is the way to go!

I was talking about Mini 14s with an acquaintance who is an amature dealer at the Kamloops Gun Show. He tells me that he has had dozens over the years and none of them shot well. He also told me that he now has two of the new "target" models, one each in laminated and Hogue stock. He says they both shoot moa and he hasn't had time to do much with the barrel tuners yet.

Based on his recommendation I'm thinking about buying a target model. I'm not wild about the looks of the laminated stock but it does look like it would be very functional, especially prone with a bipod.

I've had a Ranch Rifle for a few years now, and like most rifles it took a little work to get it to shoot well. I added a Choate flash suppressor to help with barrel harmonics, had the horrible trigger cleaned up so it now breaks cleanly at 2 3/4lbs, re-tourqued the gasblock screws so that it was even, installed a smaller gas port bushing, installed a Bushnell 3200 2-7x32mm scope in low rings, and worked up a load it likes. It now shoots 1.15'' 3 round groups consistently. One of these days I will get around to bedding the stock to see if that will tighten things up a little more.

How far and how big were the gongs? I have a 182 series I believe, and I can get the 100m gongs standing every shot if I try, (gongs are approx. 8"x12"), not exactly moa I know, but I'm not exactly an expert marksman either. From a rest I can get the 200m quite consistently, and if I really try, I can get the 300m 2 to 3 times out of 5. This is with factory ammo. I have'nt started reloading for it yet. Btw, it's all iron sights, no scope on this baby.

Me and my friend just paced the gongs off to 150yrds. They were 6" cricles we cut out of 1 3/4" steel. That Mini would shoot better with heavier bullets but not always, it too had the original aperatuer sights. The day after that shoot I was so pissed I traded it off on a Puma Mod92 in 44mag. I miss that gun but my next mini had better shoot more consistently than that one :)

I also have both, I must admit that I find it hard to find any flaws in my Marlin 357 it is one of my favourite guns. The Puma 44Mag is also a great gun though, very accurate mine goes 1" at 100yrds with factory sights. The only black marks against it is you can't clean it from the chamber like a Marlin, and the steel buttplate is hell on the shoulder. Oh yeah mine is the all stainless version. :)
