hi i understand the baikal shotguns are known to be decent rugged and well priced, i have latley been impressed by the looks of the baikal single shot rifles as a good option for a wife/sons/back up hunting rifle any one out there got any experience with one ?

Just got back from the range with a crack barrel Baikal in .308 that I picked up from a fellow gunnut.
Although it only sports an entry level 3-9 power variable and I was using factory Federal 150 grain ammo, I was still able to put a 1'' 3 shot group into the bull at 100 yards----moved out to 200 yards and I opened up my groups to 3 inches and was dropping them in at 3 inches low.
I was fairly impressed with the gun and it seems to lock up nice and tight---I was kinda worried that the scope would not stay true due to recoil and opening and closing the action, but it held up ok it seems ( I only fired ten rounds ) I think I will take it up to deer camp this comming week as a spare rifle and will let you know if I take something with it.

I thought it would have a lot more recoil than it does, being very short and light, but it was quite nice to shoot----of course I usually shoot the belted Magnums so I will have my little guy take a few shots to get a proper perspective of the recoil

I'll second what telesquirt said. I picked up a 308, also from a Gunnutzer and although I didn't do any extensive testing at the range, it shot a lot better than I anticipated, using SA surplus. I only have the iron sights and out to 100 yards it was at least as accurrate as my scoped Remington 700 BDL in 30-06.
As stated, suprisingly low recoil and a nice light rifle to handle.
It breaks down easily into 3 pieces and will make a nice "truck" or back up gun.
I'm seriously considering getting a couple more in other calibres.
I see in the remington catalogue that they are importing Russian singles - anyone know if they are the same Baikals?

I just bought one in 223 i worked up a few loads for it & got it shooting 3/4 in groups . It is currently at the gunsmiths to see if anything can be done about the 6 + lbs trigger . Otherwise it's a great bargain , if you'r looking for a scoped 300 $ truck gun ! They are on special at pro pac for $ 299.95

Okay----it was a good thing I brought the Baikal along to deer camp, as my BLR in .257 Roberts had a firing pin malfunction the first night out!
I had lined up on a heavy bodied 6 point at 300 yards and " click" no boom---ejected and tried twice more----no go, and no strike marks on the primers!
Next evening ---same field I watched 6 does feed in to me from 300 yards, they finally winded me at 60 yards and bolted.
Next night I had decided to use my two supplemental tags if the does were back and save my main tag for a hunt with my little guy.
Same field and a big doe with two yearlings came out at 300 and fed in to 225 yards about 10 minutes to quitting time----lined up on the doe and bang-flopped her with one shot----popped the barrel open and reloaded then bang-flopped a yearling with the second shot----my buddy took the last one as well and all three were within 30 yards of each other DRT.
I am really happy with the performance of the Baikal---it put those factory 150's right on the money both shots----now my son wants to take it this weekend instead or his beloved .303 British!!

When did Remington start making the BLR Rob?
The Baikal is a great rifle for the price. There was some talk a few years ago when these rifles first made an appearance that the barrels were made for Baikal by Steyr. That would ecplain the forge twist look to them and why they shoot so well.
I have one in 30-06. Other than the buttstock slapping you in the cheek on recoil, it's entirely manageable and the accuracy with factory loads is extremely good with open sights.
Rugged? basic? back up gun?
That is true about the ones we get here in Canada.
Not these ones below. They must be the most expensive Baikal IZH-18 rifles I have ever seen.
