shell holders - part 2 - Snide remarks welcome

A while back I asked about how people are carrying extra shells on their single-shot rifles.

Lots of responses and ideas, but the one that stood out was a fancy hand-made leather rig lashed onto the butt stock.

I decided that I would carry my extras on the butt stock, but didn't want quite so glamorous or expensive a solution... and the typical Uncle Mikes type of elastic holder seemed flimsy or wouldn't fit my rifle... so I decided to make my own.

Here's the prototype... a hybrid solution using a commercial elastic holder which I cut up and sewed onto a scrap of leather I had. The last row of lashing is behind the sling stud, so the whole thing doesn't slide. The leather seems to hold in place anyhow, so maybe not an issue.

If it works out, I will make an improved version, with a better piece of leather, and leather laces.

From my understanding most single shot shooters only need one bullet for their hunt. You need to make a shell holder that holds only one shell, no need to waste good leather and nylon for the 5 extra.

Is it ok to use Brasso on the shells? They're looking a little dull.

Your a 'crafty' fellow. The leather is really there to cover a gawdy wood carving. Kind of like a tattoo that went wrong so you wear a long sleeve!

Looks pretty good, just replace the nylon lace with a leather boot lace and you're good to go!

Looks like quite a good solution. The leather's a nicer touch than the black nylon when it comes to stock contact, but the elastic is great for shellholding - perfect compromise.

It's a 7mm RM -

I acquired it from another CGN member in a weak moment I think.... very nice shooter!

So far the pathetic attempts at snide comments are pretty basic - I expected better from the more experienced nutz here.

I bugs me to think some you guys are using up oxygen that I could be breathing!

Most 'slip on" synthetic buttstock holders are cheesy and wear out quick. They are ghey, but I guess they are fun for range users...

Most good quality leather ones are excellent, but $$ and not easy to find.


I'm not a real fan of buttstock ammo lopps, but I have one on my 375 Ruger, although I would remove it if had to hike for any distance. I far prefer belt mounted cartridge "wallets" like this one, that I use...

it's nice as the cartridges are held on to the "frame" of the holder via velcro- So you can remove if you wish. And you can load FAST via the holder..

Also, the strap goes over the end of the recoil pad, and really holds well.
