The 9.3X62 bear.

Is Bob W. still doing that work there?

He is doing taxidermy work, but not tanning. Steve Cooper owns and operates Tutshi Tanning and does a very good job on everything from small game to Woods Bison, although you have to twist his arm a bit to get him to do bison. They are very heavy and a lot of work.

That's a very nice bear, Ted. Well done!!!:)

Speaking of cup and core 9.3 bullets, have you ever used the 286 gr Prvi Partizans or the new(er) 286 gr Hornadys on game?

Almost all the game I have taken with the 9.3 has been using the Norma Dual-Core 286 gr bullet. Used it for years and have put quite a few tons, literally, of moose caribou and bear in the freezer using it. The largest moose I ever took was with the old Kynoch 286 gr RN that was designed for the British 360 No 2 cartridge. It is a big bluff-nosed soft point with a mild steel jacket, and really piles game up in a hurry, as does the Norma.

This is the first animal I have used the Speer bullet on. After seeing what it did to this bear, and River Rat's moose, my feeling is that if we only had it to use for big game, it would be enough.

I have a handful of the 286 Privi-Partisan bullets that a friend gave me to try, but have not used them yet. The Hornady bullet looks very good and being an Interlock design should do very well at 9.3 velocities. Have you tried either of them yet?

Also, any of you guys tried the 250 gr Balistic Tip? I have ten of those to try, and am thinking of using them in my 9.3X57.

Just for yucks I'll post up these pics of some 9.3 bullets I sectioned with an end mill in Feb
left to right 286gr Privi Partisan, Speer 270gr , Norma 286gr, Norma 232gr gives a guy a bit of insight into the jacket thickness etc. I learned that the speer hot core process doesnt fuse or solder core and jacket together like I originally thought.

here's the other side.

Here's another shot for comparison purposes with some other bullet types
front to back of pic
pp286 9.3, speer 270 9.3, nosler partiton .308 180gr, hornady 200 .358 interlock , and another hornady? or Speer in the back

Neat pictures! You can probably see that the Norma bullet is also a mild steel jacket, right?

Not sure if they still make it that way, but originally they called it "Tri-Clad Jacket." They have a thin jacket of gilding metal on both sides of the steel, and you can pick the bullets up with a magnet.

The ones I have taken out of game all look the same, whether they impacted at five yards as on one mean old bull moose, or at 250. Perfectly expanded and all weighing around 200 grains.

It's too bad Speer wouldn't make a 270gr flat base 375 cal bullet with the same reputation as the three you mention.

They're missing the boat on this one.

Didn't they used to?

Steve Cooper owns and operates Tutshi Tanning and does a very good job on everything from small game to Woods Bison, although you have to twist his arm a bit to get him to do bison.

The flat ox in my deep freeze is headed to Steve this week.

Ted

I haven't shot any game with either(so far I'm sticking to my 286 NP's for game) but I have used both at the range. I have yet to get the PP's to shoot well. I mainly use them to get the shots on paper after changing out a scope or to plink off-hand at the range.

I have found the Hornadys to be very accurate in both of my 62"s using a max load of Varget or RL15.

Ive been playing around with the Privi bullet for a bit and found it to be a bit stouter than the speer when shot into the same medium, with the bullet holding together better and retaining more weight. Nothing scientific just shooting wood etc and digging the bullets out, they shoot great in both my x62's and x57 and for the price I think they are great value. (bought a thousand) I've decided on the speer 270 for my x57 though as it seems to be just perfect for it.
I'm using the ballistic tip 250gr in the CZ , the 286 Partition in one FN98 and the Privi's in another, I did whack a 1600 lb steer for my buddy Doug with a Privi in the noggin and it seemed to work just fine I can post the pics up if theres interest but they're gorry.

I dug up some more pics of the speer and privi , in and out of their jackets

the big guy in the pic is a hornady 500 gr .458

and finally a pic of the hornady jacket with interlock ring on the left .358/200gr, PP and Speer on the right

sorry if I'm getting longwinded guys

Very, Very nice bear Why not?!
I too love that color. I have never really had a urge to take after bear. But with seeing all the pics and posts......
I am thinking the spot and stalk method would be-UH-fun?
I too have a 9.3 x 62. When I get the stock to my liking, will start on some loads. I have a box of 250gr AB's and Reloader 15, should be o.k. for most anything I am bound to encounter.

Thanks for sharing,
LeRoy

BwanaDave: Thanks for posting pictures of the sectioned bullets. I didn't expect the Prvi Partisan bullets to have such a thick jacket. Makes me wonder how they perform on game.

They are good value for the buck, but I hope they don't all shoot poorly.
