What 30-06 should I buy?

You're on the right track with your choice of cartidge. 30-06 is the right start. Stainless steel is hard to argue. The camo stock on the other hand is a limitation without benifit. There are a lot of good rifles and there is nothing wrong with a used rifle as long as it has not been abused and your chances of finding what you want on this sight are better than good. Spend some time in gun stores and anywhere else where you can try shouldering as many rifles as you can get your hands on. Once you have narrowed it down to one, go to the "exchange of" section of this sight and see what is for sale and let people know what you want.
Buy a good quality 22, like Rugers M77-22, put on an economical scope and buy a brick of 22 ammo and spend a lot of time at the range. Best wishes Marshall
 
Savage would be my choice. I like the new safety type trigger that they have which is fully ajustable. A good trigger is key to making you a good shot.
 
Ruger all the way no other way to go...... might have to get the trigger done but other than that try are sweet.
 
My first rifle is Remington,but I'm not brand loyal. I told Boogie a Ruger.My youngest son has a Browning A-bolt,I certainly can't recommend that one. I have a new Savage,I think it's the safest design out there. The new Accutrigger is as good as they say. Ugly though.
 
Look for a stainless Model 70 fwt and when you get ahold of one mount a Leupold FX II 6X36 in Leupold DD's and take it hunting. When you can afford to upgrade, add a light weight synthetic stock (my vote goes for a McMillan EDGE) and you'll have a rifle to best all rifles. It's what I did!:)

Interesting stuff here! Although I would support a vote too for Ruger(because I love mine), you really will need work on the trigger(or get a Timney trigger for it) as it is set somewhere at 8lbs now!!!!! So add another $100.00 for that work. Freaken lawyers and lawsuits brought us that!!!!

My Ruger is a 25 year old Ruger 77 that came with an adjustable trigger and came with the rings. The mounts are an integral part of the rifle and are the strongest mounts I've ever seen. It's a real tack driver and requires no sighting in from year to year. This I would buy again in a heart beat. However, spending another $100.00 on a brand new gun for a trigger isn't my idea of fun!

Onthe other hand, Savage comes already with an innovative trigger far superior to anyone else's at this point in time and Savage rifle barrels have the great reputation of being some of the very finest and accurate barrels out there right now. I believe Savage is making the best gun for the buck and your chances of getting a "dud" shooter that can't group inside a barn door at 100 yards are slim to none with Savage and all too common with the other run of the mill brands. Some of the crap I've seen from the others is down right scary requiring shims and what not to just get the scope aligned properly. You would expect more when you are spending a cool $1000.00 for a pole mounted on a piece of wood...or crappy nylon/plastic.

I Completely concur !!! i buy 99% savage, had and tried 'em all don't like 'em most;ly , I love Savage, why pay for a name , just because it's reminton, or winchester , or whatever doesn't make it perfect, each gun has it's flaws...... except savage , can't find any there, the others ? biggest flaw is overpriced !!!
 
I have a Ruger 77mkII stainless lefthand 30-06. Cost me $60 to get the trigger down to a crisp 3lbs and a Timney will cost you more than that. But recently I picked up a Savage lever action 308 in a model 99c. I like the weird actions and this is stocked more like a shotgun and has a brutally solid mech. It makes such a wonderful truck gun as well and it doesnt rattle in the bush. This rifle is 45 years old and is tight enough to squeek almost. Cycles almost dead silent in the bush unlike my Winnie 94. If Savage builds all their guns like this I can see the enthusiasm. Both guns will be hunting this fall and I am looking forward to it. I would replace either with the same I they got lost or stolen without question. Solid and very well made.

Sako A-7. They should be available by fall here in Canada. Of all the new rifles I shot at the SHOT show in Feb the A-7 stood out the most.

Ditto. I recently spent endless hours researching a rifle to buy in 30-06 and the Remington model 700 won my vote mostly due to its proven track record but I also liked the way it looked.

I got a tikka T3 Laminated stainless in 30-06. I'm very pleased with this rifle. the action is very smooth and a very simple adjusting trigger.. Put a good scope on it and youre good for a long go... It's very accurate under 1 inch out of the as they say and it's true...
