Why does it cost so much to compete on a military range in Ontario?

I had a look at the NSRA, who seem to have a program that is comparable to the Ontario groups and they charge $285.00 per year. That is quite similar to what the Ontario groups charge. BC looks a little less, so it would appear that the pricing in Ontario is not too out of line.

In addition, Winona requires people on the beach with radios to warn the RSO about boats in the fall zone. Despite the big red flag on top of the berm, boaters and fishermen are forever going into the fall zone. All shooting must stop when there is one. Even when the Militia are shooting there. The CF doesn't put out the marker buoys every year either. Costs money.
The range is currently closed for renovations too.
"2008 F Class Open Tournament has been cancelled". Lack of entries according to the DCRA's site.

the 285 for the NSRA is only for your first 4 years of membership, or maybe 5. The regular membership dues is 85$ I think. The extra 200 is to further develop and maintain their privately run long range facilities. I am not an NSRA member, but only because I could not justify that cost for only being able to get out once or maybe twice a year. Price is a big concern to everyone everywhere, but no matter what you do, there are costs involved. As a comparison, who has checked out memberships at good golf clubs? I bet you are paying more than 200 a year.

Holy crap! I would pay more than that to help maintain a privately run long range facility.
 
ORA Individual Military Membership is $100. This allows you to shoot Service Conditions and Precision Matches only (plus entry fees of course). If you plan to shoot non-military events you need to take out a full ORA membership which costs $160.
There are only 2 ORA Members of Council that are paid. One is the Membership Secretary, the other is the ORA Secretary. Neither job pays enough to cover ammo for the year.
Last I heard Range Officers are paid $100/day, which I think is really cheap for what you get. Places like Winona and Cedar Springs need 2 beach sentries. This cost is covered by the ORA($50 each for 2), however the ORA does not pay for a range officer at these ranges.
At Kingston the ORA is billed for a Range Control person so the ORA covers this cost.
Target faces for practice dates, wear centers, target frames, wind flags(for Bordon, Cedar Springs, Winona and Kingston), first aid kits, first aid courses, range officer courses all need to be paid for some how. Match organizers that shoot a match are not paid, however if a match organizer is not shooting and is only running a match and acting as the Range Officer he is paid and mileage is also paid.
Two members of council that must travel a great distance are paid milage to attend council meetings 3 times a year. ($100/ trip for a 700Km round trip)
The ORA also pays for a traveling display to attend Gun Shows and pays for parking and meals for people manning the display at the Toronto Sportman show.
For the annual provincal matches extra money is paid for markers, extra range staff (RO and 2 wing officers) and two Butts Officers and assistant BO's. Extra port-a-johns, rental of a stats trailer, generator and vehicle to transport hardware and even the piper to pipe the winner of the Lt. Gov match off the range.
Then of course if you want to get into things like printing the ORA Journal, advertising, mailing cost, long distance phone bills, associate memberships to the DCRA and the NRA UK the list goes on and on.
So if you think the ORA is getting rich off your membeship fees or match entry fees thinks again.
 
$120 dollars to shoot at a world class facility military? with meals and lodging and range access? heck to go to the match in listowel it was going to cost that much in gas to get out they're plus i'd need to pay for hotel for me my dad and my mom for the weekend. for just me and having to get out they're being the issue i'd love to be able to spend some time where i can shoot to 1000 yards does any one know what it would cost to rent milcun for a weekend?

i don't know about any of the other rangers but durring the summer connaght is never empty with 4 cadet course's for 6 weeks. Cadet Leader Army Cader Marksman, Cadet Leader Instructer Army Cadet Marksman, Cadet Leader Instructer Rifle Coach and the National Army Cadet Rifle Team. as well as the basic course who are using up the meal facilitys how ever don't shoot on the primary ranges for 6 weeks yeah it's busy all right if you don't her gun shots it's cause the range is closed

DND charges $20 for quarters and food... the other $100 is for the organisation. And don't kid yourself it's not a show up shoot your stages and leave, every shooter works the butts and scores for other shooters, so every shooter is working. The military shooters are getting paid for their days of work, as a civvy I work and pay. Now don't get me wrong, I appreciate the opportunuity to shoot at these ranges, but I do feel that I am being over charged. For a sport where we want to increase participation in all sorts of shooting activities, I feel that these costs make it very counter productive.
 
It was great when the fees was 50 and quarters and meals was 20 bucks for two friggin' days in the mecca of shooting ranges in Canada. It's too bad the price jumped to 100$ for non OSA members. I will be attending my matches more conservatively this year but it's still worth it for two days in Connaught shooting side by side with a Canadian Forces soldier. Did I mention 20 bucks for food and the quarters for two days.

Check out the NCRRA, they shoot Wednesdays and Sundays at Connaught.
 
Just a suggestion to guys who would liek to shoot run downs and the whole 9 yards on DND ranges.... Join a reserve Infantry regiment and get paid for it.... and paid ammo.... and full auto cant go wrong...
