H&R Sporters .17HMR Input

I am on a limited budget. Back in university so I'm looking at something under $200 that will shoot straight. Plus the fact that I'm moving back over-seas in July 2009 to a country that doesn't really allow firearms (rather, it's incredibly difficult and annoying to own them).

UK? :)

While at Wholesale sport, the young gent behind the counter said that there was nothing else 'worth it' under the $200-240 mark other than the Ruger 10/22 but that gun is INCREDIBLY small. I held it and... yea, I don't like the feel of it.

The "RR" furniture is often for sale - cheap - on the E & E. It's more full-size, and no barrel-band. ;)

That's why I'm looking towards this H&R, I just wish it had iron-sights so I didn't need to invest in a bloody scope as well.

We're rooting for you...

Actually moving back to Japan, and as mentioned since I am on a fixed income (student loans), $240 locally is expensive for me. Although I do admit, it sounds like fun to be able to unload 30 rounds in quick succession.

Well, after much consideration, three trips today alone and much fondling of various guns (Ruger 10/22 synthetic, H&R Sportster, Remington 597) and ended up picking up......

..... drum roll...

The Remington 597. It looks good, feels good and simply fits my hands a little better than the Sportster. So there we have it, thanks for all of your input folks, and now with that, I'm off to find that 30-round magazine.

Best of luck; range-report it soon, ok? :) Your take on the rifle is no less valid than anyone else's (i.e. who cares if anyone else already range-reported it thus far) - post groupings, too! ;)

The 597 17HMR supposedly jammed a lot. Is that still the case. I bought a Savage HMR with a cheap Simmons scopen and it is accurate but if wind picks up it drifts. I switch to the .204 ruger then

Yes, in .22

After tacking on a $60 scope from Wholesale Sport in lieu of the package-deal scope that it came with, I was successfully shooting the edges out of the holes I previously planted from 40 meters (SSJChar can correct me if I'm wrong on the distance as he is the one who helped sight it in correctly).

All I can say is that the gophers damn well better look out. I'm quite happy with it, however we found out that Remington ammunition seems to mis-fire a LOT. Out of two boxes of Remington .22 "Viper", I had fourteen mis-fire, while I tried the Remington Game-Loads, Cyclone, Yellow-Jacket and Federal 36-grain copper-plated rounds and they worked beautifully, but the Vipers simply ate ####.

Good to hear! I am biased, you see...;)

Glad to hear it - the 597 has a a good rep for accuracy, once the functioning issues are taken care of. :)

Always painful to learn that a manufacturer's rifle & ammo don't play well together...

The testing is half the fun.:)

How...poetic?;)

Glad to see you enjoy it!
