I'm Seriously looking at the PUMA lever action in .44, the price is well with in what I can afford not to mention they feel very comfortable in my hands and are pretty light. As the Puma is a Clone of the Winchester 92 it has a top eject. Can some one please educate me on what I should look for in a side scope? Also a nice replacement for the front sight as it's presently cheap.

I'm also getting a Ithica 72 Saddle gun .22 (side eject) I'll be looking for a scope for that gun too. So a nice scope for it will be nice. This gun will be used mostly for hunting RABBITS and plinking. I can't wait to make a Rabbit Pot Pie for dinner ;)

I tried a sidemount scope on my Winchester 94. It is so awkward to use it's worthless to me. If it were critical to me to use a scope on a short-range rifle like a .44 Magnum, I'd either buy a Marlin or a Ruger and sell the Puma. Otherwise I'd mount a peep sight on the Puma; shots with that rifle should be held to about 100 yards anyway. I don't believe the Puma is drilled and tapped for either a receiver or tang sight, but that's what I'd be using, probably a Marbles tang sight.
If you MUST mount a scope, try some out. get behind the scope and move your head around a bit. See which is the most forgiving of side-to side movement and still gives you a full circle. Keep power low and size small. A Leupold 1-4X, Weaver 1-3X, Weaver 2.5X, something like that.
Your comment about a "cheap" front sight doesn't explain anything. What's wrong with it?
Any rimfire scope should do on the Ithaca. I really like the Leupold, but I'm too cheap to buy one. I use a $50.00 Bushnell and it works quite well for me.
 
The carbines I've held the front sight is plastic and has that stupid neon colored tube at the end. I tend to look at that neon color and drift around then at what I want to sight in on. As for a scope for the puma it isn't super important at this time as I've only ever fired a 300 WIN MAG with a scope sorry forgot the type of gun and some pellet guns. So I have no actual preference at this time due to lack of experience shooting so all I'm doing is educating myself now so if I find I like/need a scope I'll have a clue what to look for.
 
I wouldn't put a scope on it. As mentioned, your shots should be within 100 yards and peep sights will be way easier to aquire the target.

Just my opinion.
 
is there a reason why the Marlin is better to scope, then the Puma? nobody is answering the question CK has asked...they're just telling him to get a Marlin. you're not even justifying your answer saying why the Marlin is better. :confused:
 
Mr. Friendly the Marlin is a Side eject so you just get a standard mounting system for it where as the Puma has a top eject which you need a side scope on which is an entirely different ball field when it comes to mounting.

The reasons I'm considering a Puma over a Marlin is as seen below
Marlin $100-$200 more.
Heavier.
Checkering on stock (which I really don't like).
The caliber I'm interested in have an action that's hard or nearly impossible for me to work with out it taking a trip to a guns smith to smooth it out.
Or doesn't have a full barrel length tubular magazine which ruins the looks of any lever action I think.

Unless I can find M92 Winchester NIB for the same price as a Puma (not gonna happen) I plan on getting the Puma.

As Mr. Friendly has said NO ONE HAS SAID ANYTHING REALLY on what to look for in a side scope. Thou getting a peep sight which I am considering (thanks) is a good idea as I stated the front sight is cheap. Getting a marlin rifle though they are nice guns minus what I just said about my dislikes of them, they just don't fit my finances unless I plan on getting a hunting gun in some time NEXT summer.
 
Have you looked on Ebay at the various side mounts? Pretty much guaranteed you will be D&Ting your receiver. Alot of the old scopes on there come with a side style mount that has the mount plate flat. You could get a base plate that is milled at a taper so your POI at your maximum effective range and your sight are aligned. That way in between you are only hitting the 1 1/2" to the right of your aiming point.

There was an old 1899 Savage at a gun show with such a mount. It was very intriguing. And who can forget Blondies Levergun in the good the bad and the ugly. It's going to be awkward as all get out but it should be entertaining.
I spose if you are left eye dominant you could mount it high enough to shoot that way, then there is still cheek weld on the stock.
