Bringing an unlicensed friend hunting

I guess I took a hunters safety test when I was about eleven, it was mandatory in the school division I schooled in. Nothing since then, certainly not one ever to get a hunting license.

I am pretty sure it is not a requirement here in Sask, at least not a specific course. You just show them your Sask health card to get a license. I can not remember them asking me for anything other than my health card and maybe my drivers license to prove that I am in possesion of my own health card. I did not hunt game while I was in my twenties, I have certainly never been asked for a hunters education/safety certificate or my PAL when buying a hunting license since I was in my teens. That was back in the eighties when I used to shoot the odd goose down. I have not had that certificate out of the drawer since about 1990.

I suppose if they really wanted to push for proof of some sort they might ask you for your PAL, which is not really hunting related beyond the safe use of firearms. The game wardens here are "kinda" told not to ask for any federal documentation relating to firearms, they are provincial employees hired to enforce provincial law. I have never heard of anybody being asked for a PAL or firearms registration certificate by a game warden or by an office employee there.

They used to ask for a hunters safety cert. or a previous years hunting license or minors permit, like I said not so much anymore. The synopsis indicates that youth aged 12-18 needs proof of a firearm safety/hunter education course. I can not find anything indicating that adults need such a document.

The way I see it is if you are an adult and want to buy a license here in Sask, there are no "CORE" or similar programs or examinations that are required.

We do most unfortunately. I'm not really sure what we'll be taught during the course but it's another way for the provincial government to make some money haha. The courses don't run on any sort of schedule, they just happen when enough people in a given area show enough interest. There are only a few courses on right now, no where near my town... Hopefully as summer fades to fall courses will start happening more frequently and I can get on the hunting band wagon.

I intend on getting my hunting license this fall and I'm trying to get a good friend of mine on the bandwagon as well. My question may not have a clear-cut answer, and I intend to call the DNR tomorrow for the official answer, but can he come with me regardless of whether he has a license or not? I would assume that as long as he wasn't using the firearm that he could tag along but perhaps it's one of those grey areas. Thanks guys.

Yes, your good friend may accompany you, but know well that the hunting handbook is very specific about a hunter being permitted to possess only one "weapon". Should a CO find you (and/or your unlicensed good friend) in a wildlife habitat with two "weapons", you - and/or your good friend - may be charged with something.
