Besides Semi-Auto, what is the best action to have for quick follow up shots on big game?? Lever, Bolt, Pump?? Looking for a deer/moose gun that is dependable and quick enough to hit deer on the run.

Second shot?

Someone may have to sit in the corner for not practicing over the summer....

Old indian saying.
1 shot... deer
2 shots... maybe
3 shots... nope

I prefer the reliability and accuracy of bolt actions myself though I have semi, pumps, and levers and love them all! :D

Rarely do I need a second shot but I can work the action on a bolt pretty fast if need be.

if you need a second shot go and spend some money on a few boxes and learn to hit the target where you want to the first time. I've yet to start hunting just got my permit info today and getting My Hunting Number tomorrow but even I know you want 1 shot 1 kill. But if you want the quickest action get a lever. If you practice you don't need to remove the butt plate from your shoulder.

A second shot is supposed to be a humane back up plan, or at worst, a last-ditch defense against a charging moose. Third, fourth shots...? Cheating.

This thread is going downhill...:D

I love the Western Opinions.

Pumps and Levers have done the Eastern Ontario woods hound hunted deer in for a long time, pick the one that feels right to you.
Shoot them until they hit the ground, then be ready to shoot again.

I say it's the one you are most used to!

Pumps can be lightening fast if they are pumped on the recoil, but that's more of a shotgun point and shoot type scenario that must be practiced to make it a natural muscle memory process. I've never tried a pump rifle that way. Maybe some rifle pump owners can share if they do this? I think not, because rifles need to be carefully aimed and pumping on the recoil doesn't aid in accurate shooting.

So I think a lever probably is the fastest (in a more than 2 bullet capacity rifle).

This is nice in theory, but in the real world of hunting animals don't always die with the first shot every time, even with perfectly placed shots. They can be dead on their feet and need time to bleed out and die. A second shot to put them down faster is never a bad thing.

One shot kills are an ideal situation that may or may not happen.
