I'd have to go with a good lever. A doube barrel would be faster, but the capacity would be a hindrance. Pumps might be close as well. Though I've never shot alot of pump rifles. Something that would require alot of practice. Even a bolt can be fast, if you practice enough. Like the one person said, .303SMLE. Very fast action.

Why would learning to be a good shot be nonsense. You think the muzzleloader guys and the single shot guys should be using autoloaders or pumps with 20 shot clips? ...If you have too then go for it....Not my bag...I'd rather spend a 100 rounds at the range and a afternoon to make sure that first shot hit its mark than worring about how fast I get off a second shot.

I prefer a pump to a lever for a fast follow up shot. Where I hunt the 760/7600 is king. Ironically though the only time I've ever needed a follow up shot was during muzzle loader season, put a slug over a deer's back and watched it look all around for two minutes while I tried to reload! I do agree that Smelly is the quickest bolt to be had (my back up deer gun).

The spray,and pray coment was what I was calling nonsence.This is a common misconseption of ignorant people when it come to others using repeating arms.Its all about choice,and I prefer a pump gun in most cases.It does not make me any less proficient than someone with a bolt,lever,or single shot.
As for the 100 rounds practice at the range.It's a great idea,but there is one hunter in my gang that can shoot dime size groups all day at the range,but when it comes to deer his success is litte to none.Not knockin practice(because I do) just shooting game is a whole lot different than shooting paper.

My first comment was miss understood a little. A person shouldn't need a second shot *this is when everything works out good* but with out practice you can't hit something worth crap as you don't know your gun. Granted sometimes a second shot is needed to either finish off the animal or to make sure it goes down before it gets tangled up in the bushes *running dead I know bears are known to do this from time to time for short distances due to a low heart rate or something like that*. So spend some money of ammo to use at the range you get to know your gun you can tweak it so it shoots as strait as possible and you get to work at chambering the next round as fast as possible. It benefits all your shooting skills you need to hunt.
Like i said...Learn to shoot and make a clean kill with your first shot. The second shot,or the speed of making a second shot shouldn't be a factor. Only an ignorant person could confuse this.
Pump is the fastest - you finger never leaves the trigger
Lever I think can be just as fast & it's more cool
Bolt - Not as fast, but fast enough. & usually more accurate & greater distance than the above.

I would think a double rifle would be the fastest and most reliable at a second shot.
