This is my latest acquisition. I think it is a MkII (no star). This will undoubtedly be verified/disproved by the experts on board. Not in new condition, but an interesting piece of history nontheless.

Ross

Lucky you!I have the same exact rifle with that early sight.
Unfortunately, mine had its forestock cut off very short... I succeeded in getting most of the replacement parts but I still have to find a suitable walnut piece to match the original grain and then graft it to the front part of the stock. Last fitting will have to be done with the barreled action in the stock.

Maybe he'd be nice enough to send you some pics and measurements for the grafting project...

Nice rifle btw!

I heard Ross never made two of the same rifle...a bit of an exaggeration but...lots of changes as the production line ran.

You are not wrong, I have read and heard this as well. I wish I could quote but no. Ross's Rifle rifle was impressive, I believe he was near to a semi auto rifle in the WWI era as it wouldn't have taken much. Ross was so involved to improve his rifle. I had three and all were not the same.

There's times I regret not getting that Mk II you had for sale...

MkII no-star with it's original MkII rear sight. Interesting patch under the Harris Lever- missing it's foresight hood, and the buttplate looks suspicious...at least you got it before Bubba did! Guard it well until your gummint calls for it....

PerversPépère, I will be glad to send any photos, dimensions you want. I took 19 photos today, but didn't think you guys wanted to see that many. Rossguy, I was sure it was an early MkII, no star, the "Sir Charles Ross and his Rifle" booklet shows one just like it with the flat buttplate. Somebody should track down Bubba and tell him you shouldn't sand across the grain with coarse paper. I have been tryng to read the butt unit stamp, it might be 8TH MR. would like to enlist all of you to help me in my search for a MkIII. That is what I was really looking for. I have a line on a full-length barrel, but haven't seen it yet. The wood on the MkIII I have is not restorable.

Pics

Thanks, Bushwhacker!
Perhaps some pics of the front portion, starting at the rear sight up to the muzzle with a measuring tape alongside, just to give me a reference point.
That would be great, for sure!
Tiriaq sent me an original Ross 1905 bayonet about two months ago so I could make sure of the dimensions at the foremost point of the forearm (reminds me I ought to send it back fast, now that I've taken all the measurements I needed, BTW...)
Like I said, I just need the properly grained piece of walnut to undertake that restoration.
