300 Win Mag vs. 30-06

I have driven 180 grain bullets at over 2900 in 30-06 easily and with no pressure signs using good ol' Bl-C2.
As to the original question, yes, they are both 30 cal, but the extra horsepower in the WM will allow you to shoot 200 gr+ bullets at a reasonable speed if the barrel has the correct twist rate.
You need not go to a big 30 to get good long range performance, in fact if you were to stick with 6.5/260/264 or 7mm/280/284 you will get superior long range ballistics with lighter bullets and with much less recoil than a 300 WM. The 300 is expensive to feed and hard on barrels for target shooting. If you were to take up competing, you could not use the 300 - or any magnum - in certain shooting disciplines.

the other point is you use a lot more POWDER for another say maybe 200 yards range- something like another 20 grains, give or take- they use the same bullets,so it's really a question of whether you want the "longer legs"plus the ammo is of course much more expensive because it's got the word "MAGNUM" IN IT- same deal goes for the gun
the way i look at it is this: the 308, 06, and 300 are basically the same, but each has longer legs( ie more range ) and burns more powder to get there. provided you use the same bullets- however, if you're going to go over 220 grains in 30 cal, you might as well go for the 338
you also have to check the twist of each of the 30 cals- the faster the twist , the better it'll handle heavier bullets
308's can be either 1/12 or 1/10, the 06 is typically 1/10 , as is the 300- so both the 06 and the 300 can handle the same "spectrum" of bullets, just that the 300 does it faster

300WM has a flatter trajectory.
So far my buddy and me are attacking 200 yd paper. We got some one inch group with 75 gr bullets.
200 is the longest range we can find so far. But we are preparing for 400 yd.

It can be said there are similarities between the .30-06, and .300 WM, and that some handloaders can start to bridge the gaps between them, but each round has intrinsic qualities that lend better to some applications. The .3006 will reach out to distances that a .300 WM will, but, generally-speaking, with less energy, greater wind-drift, and greater trajectory. These can be managed with practice, which comes easier to some when shooting something with less recoil and less cost.
