Casting bullets: Is it worth it? Time consuming?

i can't say about pistol, i probably wouldn't, but for muzzleloader i think its worth it, particularly if you shoot a .58 cal as i do. i got into it after watching the "patriot" movie. it is kinda fun!

From a target shooting (benchrest) standpoint I make 'em quite hard as i have a large supply of Lino and Monotype. This works well if you have established your proper dia. bullet. For Hunting I alloy them based on the velocity I will be firing them at. My favorite hunting rifle is a 50/90 Sharps w/black powder and i use a 30-1 mix of lead/tin, for me, higher velocities call for more tin or lino. The problem with hardening them too much is they become brittle and can shatter on heavy bone, at least they did in our tests. Bullets made of just lead and varying amounts of tin tend to hold together better and you get that classic mushroom bullet look, when you dig it out of your Buffler.

If you are intrested at all in casting your own bullets check out the cast ing forum http://castboolits.gunloads.com/
lots of great info there
for lubes use the search function there and look for felix lube
a soft lube that works well

from what I understant a soft lube is "better" than a hard lube
the Idea being that the lube should do just that ....LUBE ...... if you are looking around the backstop at your range have a look at the diferent fired cast bullets.......a bullet with hard lube will still have lube left in the rings whereas a soft lube will be consumed in the barrel........this is from an expierienced (read oldtimer) caster in my area.........makes sense to me

I expect him to be along any time now.............HEY BOB!!!!!!

Except, wouldn't it be better to have some harder lube left over? Wouldn't it suck to run out of lube 3" before the muzzle?
