hey guys, I have a old 870 wingmaster with a 30 in barrel chambered for 2 3/4in shells, where can I buy a 8.5-14in barrel that will fit, and could I then shoot 3in out of it if the barrel is capable or does the the reciever have to be capable as well. Is it worth while to convert this gun for a backpacker, and are wingmasters better than a normal 870?

sorry about so many questions I just don't know shotguns very well but think it would be fun to build one?:D

You won't be able to fire 3" shells out of that receiver. Mossberg makes add on barrels, although, I don't think they have anything that short. You might want to try badboybeason on this site, I think he has shorter barrels.

The Wingmaster, as far as I know, has better internals, as far as hard chromed breach block and such, as well as a steel trigger guard instead of the plastic that the express version sports.

Personally, I wouldn't mess up a decent Wingmaster for a Tac gun build myself, but to each there own:D

Dlask makes 12 1/2" and 14" barrels that will fit your Wingmaster and of course there are also Remington 14" barrels. The ejector and ejector spring needs to be changed on your receiver and then you are good to go to shoot 3" shells. Someone may chime in to say that the early 870's had smaller ejector ports but they must be rare as I have never seen one. I have seen a lot of 870's.
